Yes and no. You should be able to provide for your guests or you shouldn't be having the party. However, most people will ask what they can bring, so when they ask, tell them "A six pack of your favourite beer" or "A bottle of wine" or "Chips and Salsa" or "Some cookies."

A guest should not be expected to cook for *your* party and should not be expected to have to spend money to attend your party. However, a courteous person will always offer and not be offended when that offer is accepted.

A lot of people put bring a dish to pass...I wouldn't say it was tacky or anything. BYOB is fairly common too so don't worry about it.

You could make it a potluck -- most people understand what that is. The whole point is that everyone brings something.

Or you could just put -- "Extra drinks and snacks are not required but would be appreciated! ;) " on it... most people would feel honor-bound to bring something.

Call it a potluck, and ask them to bring their favorite food or drink to share with others!

Absolutely! No one should be expected to provide for all. So many people are picky about what they drink or eat, plus it makes it more affordable and less of a headache for you, and not to mention your friends will get to try new dishes or drinks, its fun!
