Glasgow mainly Protestant. Jobs for all. Irish Catholics arrive. Suddenly not enough jobs for all. Protestants try to preserve their dominant position. Catholics cry foul. Rivalry transfers to football ground.

Celtic was founded by Catholics and are meant to support a free united Ireland.

Rangers are meant to be protestant and in support of the queen and the idea of Great Britain.

Thats why Celtic sing fields of anthenry and wave irish flags and Rangers sing Rule Britannia and wave union jacks.

Celtic got the idea from Hibernian, The word Hibernian is the roman word for Irish. Celtic where at first going to be called Glasgow Hibernian the same way Dundee United where called Dundee Hibernian to begin with.

Rangers had an orange strip a few years ago, I think thats because of the orange marches in Northern Ireland.

Hope that helps.

As many have pointed out it stems from religious differences. However unless you are a Celtic fan, just go along and forget about football (probably impossible). If you are asked about it, just say whether you like footy or not, you don't understand it and hope that eventually the hatred will be resolved (unfortunately to be unlikely). Instead turn them to sports or matters that you feel confident on. If your other half respects you to any degree and understands your dislike of footy, ask him to shield you from this.

Also reference to Govan showers, Castle Greyskull and "you seem to be doing okay in the diddy cup" should be avoided as Rangers fans are notorious for having no sense of humour, and will probably start singing the Scottish anthem of the south west of Glasgow "Rule Britannia" or even "God Save the Queen"

the feud isn't about football it's more to do with religion, one team is they think only for catholics and the other they think is for protestants so they act like idiots and thugs causing trouble wherever they go saying it is to do with football!
