Hey DCMan,
Art is wonderful. Giving is great. If you need the money, to pay for the supplies, begin selling them. If you give them to a church, you can claim them on your taxes, but you need to justify the amount you claim.
You should get some compensation for your art, that way you know you are appreciated! There are sites on the internet that you can post pictures of you work, and sell them. You could also make a web site for that purpose, or sell them on E-bay.

if you believe you are at the point where your art is marketable make an effort to contact some local coffee shops where you can have a small showing of your art. Take some digital slides, these can be simple digital photographs of your art, and show them some samples of your work. If you are painting solely as a hobby you may sell your paintings at cost plus a little extra to make a profit. If this is successful and your city has an art trail go visit galleries and talk to the artist. They will be able to help you with how much they paid for the gallery space, commission pricing and contact information. I would just try and meet some artist. Good luck.

Well, you could bring up the fact that you're considering doing freelance work to try and earn a little more cash. Tell friends and family that you have a store or try and get a friend to help you appraise the paintings so that you might determine a price if you wish to sell them.
However, you might still want to give your paintings to people as gifts or some other reason. Whatever your reason, don't let this dilemma deter you from painting. What matters most is that you enjoy what you do. Good luck to you.

This is a question very close to my heart because I have been an artist for twenty-five years and although I have sold many paintings, I do not like to sell my work. There came a time when my paintings became a personal act of a sacred nature. I did do commercial art at one time and I am not berating that per se, but for me creativity has become a sacred act that cannot be sullied by material interests. I think of it like this - Some religious people take their religion up as a vocation - they become priests and make their living practising their religion. Other religious people become, if you will, mystics who connect to divinity not as a vocation but in a private sacred, and mystical way. Decide why you practise art and what this practise means to you, and you will know the answer for yourself.

If there is someone special that you really feel a need to give a painting to, do it. If not, find some art shows where you can sell your paintings and make some room and some money to make more!!!

My experience has been when you give your art away, people value it for what it cost them - close to nothing.
Treat your painting like a profession - would a doctor, lawyer, carpenter, mechanic give all his work away for free? No.
Respect your work and people will respect you as an artist.
The only time I have given my art away was as part of PR or advertising for myself (small prints to galleries or ad agencies- www.newfishart.com).

I suggest you try selling a few, even if you have to start with garage sales or flee markets. As for giving, I would feel comfortable to share with someone you sincerely believe appreciates you and your efforts.Good luck and create something great!

Give them to special people only, specialize the painting for the person... otherwise, sell them...allow your work to help you!

I give all of my art away. But first I scan it. People love something original for a gift.
