Surround the base with clear shelf paper, sticky side up. Cats dislike the feeling on their paws and therefore won't go near the tree to climb it.

Try a small spray bottle of water and spray the kitten when it goes near the tree. The kitten will get the message eventually.

you get a water bottle and spray the kitten when it gets in the tree. thats what we were told to do to train are kitten for climbing are christmas tree.

It's nearly impossible but you can try a squirt bottle with water in it - everytime the cat gets close to the tree give him a squirt in the face.
Probably will only work when you are watching though.

keeping them out of the room. Cats like trees, they like to climb. You can't always watch your cat and probably wouldn't want to wake up one morning to a toppled tree.

Make loud noise to scare it when it touchs the tree.
