Ignore the vulgar responses for a start.
The truth is what you already know as far as weight goes. You are, indeed, overweight for your size.
As for going out on New Years. Why the hell not?!!
My dear, it is your low self-esteem that will keep you from having a good time on the partiest day of the year, not your weight!
Who cares if "men find it attractive"?
The reality is in the new year, you can eat sensibly and go on an exercise regime and start to get in shape and the knock on effect is that your self-esteem will increase. Not because you've lost weight but because you're in shape and your body is doing what it's meant to do.
Overweight or not overweight, what is attractive is a person who is comfortable in their own skin. It doesn't matter what you wear, people are attracted to people who like themselves.
If you go out on New Years wearing something you feel comfortable in and with a big smile on your face, then you are going to have a good time.
As a further note, never ever, ever diet. It's a vicious cycle of having a pointless goal which is difficult to maintain. Go for being healthy and fit when you decide to better yourself. Think about this. You diet and diet, denying yourself food and then over-exercise. You get to your goal weight. Now then, what do you do now?
Keep denying yourself food and keep treadmilling like a madwoman? No, because you will start to lose too much.
Do you eat what you want but keep the same exercise regime? No, because you will take in more calories than you spend.
You see? Your body is a machine, fuel (food) in to make it run and don't put too much in that you aren't going to use.
Good luck and enjoy your new year...
Oh, and ignore those who answer with cruelty. What goes around, comes around. ;)
To Jenn: A size 16 in the US is good!?! You're having a laugh. That is about a size 20 over here and seriously obese. A size 16 in the UK is about a 12 US.
Geesh!

You do sound overweight. 12 Stone is a lot of weight to carry around for someone who is only 5' 3" tall. In comparison to my wife who is 5' 4" weighs 9 Stone and is a size 10. Your main worry really is the threat of things like Diabetes, or high cholesterol which will coat your veins in great lumps of fat, varicose veins, blotchy skin and of course the inability to exercises the fatter you become. I think if you go into your forty's overweight then generally it is too late to do anything about it. All this beauty on the inside is a load of rubbish. The inside of a fat persons body is not a beautiful site in fact it is quite revolting and is certainly not very healthy. If I was a young man looking for a wife knowing the facts about the life expectancy of a fat person, I would go for someone that respects their body and is not likely to die young on me from the diseases that fat can cause. I think most men prefer the slimmer woman. You should look after your body for yourself first. Respect your body and you will respect yourself.
Yes I am slim, but then I work at it. Plenty of good food and water, followed with plenty of exercises. That is what we are supposed to do. We were bred from the beginning to do that.

I don't know what to say to this question.. I sort of feel sad that you would ask something like 'Should I go out on New Year's Eve looking like this' - looking like what? A normal woman? Please please please don't be so hard on yourself. Focus on being happy, content with yourself and your life, full of joy and enthusiasm and fun, and THAT is what is attractive to men. At 32, I should have thought you'd know that, and you'd have realised that men who would only look as far as your outward appearance are not worth your time. Go out and have a ball on New Year's, and if you find a man, great. If you don't, that's okay too - you're young and there are years of pulling opportunities ahead! Just give yourself a break and let yourself enjoy your life. Life's too short to wonder whether you're too unattractive to leave the house. Honestly! Get out there and enjoy yourself. (I used to be 324 lbs, or 16st 10lbs, by the way - I'm not any more, I'm probably about the same weight as you now, just a little bit taller, so when I say I know what it's like to wonder if you should just sit at home because you're too fat to go out, believe me, I know what I'm talking about).

You asked, "Should I go out on new years looking like this or stay in?" Yes, you should go out and have the time of your life and celebrate the many ways you were blessed in the past year and anticipate the blessings the new year will bring! Looks come and go, the world has room for few beauty queens, the rest of us have to rely on our inner beauty. I'm sure under that self doubt you have a wonderful spirit and it's time for you to let it shine!

depending on the proportion of your body, weight has nothing to do with it, you could have all that and be top heavy but skinny on the bottom, or the other way around...more junk in trunk than on top
i am 5'4 and about the same weight (maybe a tad less), and i am very curvy in all the right places and have no trouble with guys, in other words my weight is proportionate to my body
edit*** go out...no reason to stay home! go out and celebrate, have fun and a guy will see how much fun you are having and may want to hang out with you as well

Girl, I'm a guy and seriously it doesn't matter. You could be a supermodel but you're a ***** with a terrible personality you'll be unattractive. It really is up to your personality. As I've gotten older I've realized that it really is about who the person is. Forget about those numbers and concentrate on other things.
If a real man likes you, he likes you for you.

don't stay home if you don't want to. if you want to go out and have fun on new year's, then go do so! to me you sound fine and a guy should like you for who you are on the inside because after everything, that's all that really matters.

If a guy does not like you bc of your height/weight . . then he is not worth your time anyway. Half of the guys out there who think they should only date gorgeous women are nothing to look at themselves. Just be yourself and the right guy will come along.
