well it seems like you known him for a long time.. well yeah if you haven't told him before you love him it will be hard for you to say it to him, but after you telling him how you feel, you will feel better because you have those emotions and feelings locked inside of you. so just like take him to like wherever you feel comfortable talking about (like on the phone or go to a park) how you feel about him. if he likes you he say he loves you and he is a good friend of yours im sure he wouldnt ditch you just cause you said you love him. hope this helps.

this can be a terrifying situation because you yearn for your relationship with your best friend to cross that line but you're afraid that if things don't work out it could potentially ruin your friendship. however, if you've been friends for six years, your relationship should have a strong enough foundation to withstand anything... it's going to take a little maturity and possibly some patience on both parts.
the best way to approach this is to be as open and honest with him as you can. think of it this way... if you share just about everything else with him, think of how you're concealing your feelings and keeping this from him... and depending on how long you've been falling in love with him, it could eventually be detrimental to your friendship because you might reach a point where you can't stand it anymore and want to push him away. so talk to him, tell him how you feel and find out how he feels. if it's not mutual, then accept it and move on. if there is a rejection here, don't let it get in the way of your friendship. remember that you were best friends first and that doesn't have to change... do not look at this as the only reason you've put so much into the relationship was for the remote chance that one day you might become more than friends... if this is the case, then you'll have to deal with the aftermath and explain to him why your friendship is ending. if there is a mutual interest here, then don't rush things. don't lose sight of your friendship amidst your romantic relationship! always be best friends no matter what happens between you and you should be okay.
good luck.

You are in one of the best possible situations. Tell him exactly what you said in this question. That you don't know exactly how to put it in words but that it sure is fun falling into love with someone who you feel is your best friend. Smile then ask him if he misses you as much as you miss him when you are not together.
