Hi there...consider using either free online classifieds such as Petfinder http://www.petfinder.com or your local Virginia/DC Craigslist http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/va . With Craigslist choose the nearest location from this website then look for the section titled Community and subsection Pets. People post ads every minute daily for free kittens on Craigslist so be sure to check back often.

Check out your local shelter, or cat rescue societies. They generally charge a minimal adoption fee ($50 or so) which includes their initial vaccinations, and generally a spay/neuter. If that's too expensive for you, seriously reconsider getting a kitten. Cats cost money. If you can't afford $50 (which is very cheap for immunizations and spay/neuter), you won't be able to afford food, litter, vet bills, etc, in the future. Shelters may be a little more demanding about adoption priviledges right now, because of Christmas-- they try to avoid having people give pets as presents, as it often doesn't work out.

I would not take a free kitten, depending on the atmospher they grew up in, you can adopt one for almost nothing, typically the adoption fees pay for the shots and the spay or nueture of your cat. I got a free cat one time, and it ended up being very sick, I dumped about $3500 into trying to cure it, then it died, and now my other two cats are sick too, and its never going to go away, Adoption companies, screen all the animals before placing them in a home! Good Luck to you and your new kitten!!!

There is no such thing as a free kitten! Consider adopting from a local animal shelter or rescue.
