yeah he retired undefeated but who did he fight. in order to be the best you have to fight the best which the rock did not do he fought alot of boxers out of there prime. Ali on the other hand fought numerous boxers that are in the hall of fame and he fought them in there prime and besides liston he did'nt start losing until his late 30's come on now. ROCKY MARCIANO IS WAY OVERRATED!!!!!!

You're right when you write "Who did he fight?" the same can be said about Bernard Hopkins. Just because Rocky came into a era where the quality of opposition wasn't as good as it was in the 70's doesn't take away from the fact that the playing ground was indeed equal and any fighter that he fought had the same chance as he did to win or lose. That's what makes any sport when done fairly with the same rules and regulations great to watch, unlike life where there's so much outside forces involved.
We here in the boxing section of Yahoo Answers seem to know this better than anyone else, that's why we have "Dream Match-ups" because we know that sometimes fighters were better or worse than there eras allowed. Brent, Toughguy, Smitty and whoever else puts forward a good match up always gets three or four responses to their match ups. Because we always have a opinion.
The man earned his spot in history against the best competition at the time. He is the only Heavyweight Champion to retire undefeated and never made a comeback. Were there better Heavyweights before and since? Sure, but none retired undefeated.
Thanks for the question Danger.

Ezzard Charles was still a great fighter when he fought Marciano. Marciano would have destroyed Johanssen or Patterson. When interviewed after the Moore fight Marciano stated he was going to fight again. I don't know why he didn't. The amount of training that Marciano did to get ready for fights may have been getting harder and harder for him to do as he got older. Liston had only had 13 fights when Marciano retired. He was still 7 years away from his first title shot. Liston would have given Marciano a hard time if they fought around 1960.

Rocky Marciano was a spartan and that's how he won his fights. He trained as if he was going to fight an 80 round fight. Rocky had amazing endurance and stamina which was far greater than any fighter in the modern era of boxing. He had amazing determination and a great will to win. He had enormous power in either hand. Sometimes it really amazes me at the lack of respect given to Rocky and I know it's only opinions but you can't disrespect what he accomplished in the ring. He broke blood vessels in Roland LaStarza's arms, knocked Jersey Joe Walcott unconscious after absorbing a tremendous beating for 12 rounds. How many fighters in history could have done that? The answer is none sir. Rocky also feared nothing or nobody at all in the ring. You know Ali as great as he was lost to Leon Spinks and Jimmy Young made him look bad. In my opinion Rocky would have destroyed either one of these guys. As far as some of the people that Rocky fought before and after capturing the championship Roland LaStarza was 37-0 before losing to Rocky finishing with a record of 55-8. Rocky also beat him by knockout later on when champion. Harry "Kid" Mathews was 87-7-7 and Rocky knocked him out senseless in only two rounds. Joe Louis who was indeed beyond his prime was beaten badly y Rocky who later apologized to Joe. Joe told him that he probably could have even beat him during his prime which should tell you all something right there. Ezzard Charles (twice) and Jersey Joe Walcott (twice) were certainly not prima donnas in the ring either along with the great Archie Moore who happens to have the most knockouts in history. Rocky was great and he was a slugger with heart and determination like nobody who ever stepped into a ring. He would have been hard for anybody to beat. You might believe that he was overrated but I certainly think I make a valid case that he was not! Thanks for the question sir.

Rocky was a good bang around guy, great heart, strong punch. But so what? I think Johnson, Dempsey, Ali, Liston, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Louis (prime), Byrd and either Klitschko would have took him to school. They also say HW boxing sucks now... does it? Could Marciano carry his weight now days? My answer is no. Valuev is 45-0, I believe he'll surpass Marciano. Does that make him better? Not really. Does it make him worse? Definately not. I believe in a Marciano v Valuev fight would see Valuev winning. Valuev will never know the legacy Marciano did. Why? Because Valuev is correctly rated, Marciano is over rated. Marciano was the first white champion in WELL over a decade in a racist time. Now the the big 3 are all whites, none of them are a big name because they are not American in a nationalist time. If Valuev was a white American as oppose to a white Russian, he'd enjoy the hype too. That's the world we live in.

OK I see where this is going I,m sure that most of us that get on this site don,t come on here to spew racist comments. I like most of the questions and answers but if some of you want to spread your raciest views i,m sure there are a lot of sites on the Internet that you will find a lot of people like your self so please go there and burn a flag if you want but for those of us who just want to talk boxing leave us alone Marciano was not overrated he and his people were very smart that is the business side of boxing and I love Marciano he was everything you could want in a fighter do I think that there are oyher fighters that could have beaten him yes but I can say that about 99% of all fighters so lets keep it clean please

yeah your right. Talented fighters aren't supposed to beat every fighter they fight against. Having a couple losses on your record is WAY better than being undefeated.

MY GRANDFATHER AND FATHER REMEMBER HIS FIGHTS, AND I HAVE THE OLD BLACK AND WHITE FIGHTS, THE MAN WAS A NATURAL BORN ATHLETE, WITH A FREE RIDE TO BASEBALL OR FOOTBALL.. H TRAINED 85 ROUNDS FOR A 15 ROUND FIGHT-------- NOT A 10 OR 12 ROUNDER LIKE NOW, HIS PUNCH- WHAT LOOKED LIKE A LOVE TAP WAS A DEVASTATING BLOW, HE HIT HARDER THAN TYSON AND FORMAN, HOW MANY BOXER DO YOU KNOW THAT SHEARED OFF TEETH AT THE BONE AND FRACTURED FOREARMS, ALONG WITH BLOOD VESSEL DAMAGE, SURE HE FOUGHT SOME OLD TIMERS BUT THAT IS IN ANY SPORT, HE DID NOT HAVE A GLASS JAW AT ALL, AND COULD SEND YOU TO LA LA LAND WITH A BLOW
