When he/she can climb out of it. Usually between 18 months and 2 years.
Consider a toddler bed--it's more their size than twin beds

i moved my daughter from a crib to a twin bed at 18 months and never had any problems with her. to see if your child is ready, place the crib mattress on the floor for a few nights and see what happens.

i believe 35 inches tall is the recommendation from the crib makers though on when kids need to be out of the crib by.

I don't think any younger than 18 months, but if you want and the child is comfortable you can strech a crib out to about age 3.

My daughter never tried to climb out of the crib. When we had number 2 on the way, we set up the toddler bed and it was there, ready for her to sleep in. We never pushed her to go into it. Finally, she just asked if she could have her nap in there. We said, "Sure." She slept fine, then after about a week she wanted to sleep in the bed at night. She's been there ever since. She was about 2.5 years old when she started sleeping in it at night. It probably took about a month after we set if up for her to start sleeping in it. I'm glad we did it this way, there was no crying or fighting to keep her in her bed.

when he/she starts trying to climb out of the crib. I would not push the issue...it is kind of nice to know that they are secure and in one spot...not wandering around their room or the house or getting hurt.

I know some one who put their son in a regular bed at 18 months, and has had tons of issues with trying to get him to sleep through the night (he is now 4). It was just way too early for him, and ended up being counter productive.

My daughter is almost 3 and is still in her crib. She loves it, and does not have any desire for the change as of yet. She typically sleeps 12 hours a night...uninterrupted!

As with most things, each kid is different, you know him/her best...so just read the child, they will usually let you know things (as I am sure you know).

Best wishes and enjoy the little one!!!

I kept my child in a crib until we started toilet trainging. I figured that keeping a child in a crib when you are encouraging him/her to go potty in the chair/toilet, it is counterproductive and confusing to keep the child in the crib. However if your child starts trying to climb out of the crib before then, it becomes a safety issue and maybe you should talk to your child's pediatrician if that is the case. Good Luck!

My daughter never slept in a crib. She was terrified of it. She was a reflux baby and slept in a swing until 14 months old. At that age, we moved her mattress to the floor and put floor mats all around it in case she rolls off. Her bedroom is babyproof and we kept the door shut and a monitor on. Now at 17 months, she puts herself to sleep on her mattress. When she's 2 or so, we'll put the mattress on a bedframe. Yyou kind of have to feel your baby out to figure when is the right time. Just take safety precautions.

When they are getting out of th crib on their own. Only then should you transfer them, don't rush it because that's just a whole other headache. Once my son was moved to a toddler bed he was gettingout 20-30 times a night, drove us nuts!

Two of mine learned to climb out at about 13 months of age. so they had to be on a mattress on the floor and the moved to bed at 18 months.
My middle child, however, hated beds. She wanted to stay in her crib forever. She never hurt herself climbing out, she would just call out in the morning when she wanted to get up. I let her stay in it until she was 3 years old.
You just have to know your child and do what makes sense to you.

There is no set age I don't think. I put my kids into a toddler bed when they got big enough to climb out of their crib.
