Where do you plan on living? If you plan on living in the US then you have 3 options.

1. You can apply for Direct Consular Filing (DCF) if you are currently both living in Canada and want to move to the US permanently. It's the quickest option, usually taking anywhere from a week to 3 months, but your spouse must meet Canada's residency requirements to qualify.

2. If you are still in Canada and your spouse in the US, then you can apply for the K-3 Spouse Visa - allows you to live in the US with your spouse while awaiting approval of the I-130 or you can file adjustment of status to Permanent Resident instead of waiting for the I-130. The K-3 takes about 6-12 months.

3. You can also go the CR-1/IR-1 Visa (I-130) route, which takes longer (about a year or more), but allows you to enter the US as a Permanent Resident immediately.

Are you in the US or canada? My wife came here (US) from brazil on a fiance visa. We had a quick civil ceremony, then filed for a change of status from fiance to wife of a US citizen. She got her first green card about 7 months later, her permanent one 2 years after that. A year after receiving her permanent green card she will be eligible to file for citizenship.

Why would you want to lower your standard of living? Maybe your just testing here to see if Canadians meet the same resistance as other immigrants NO they are more welcome and less likely to stay!
