Why would any good Catholic give money to the church. It is like paying off all those who have been raped by the Priest. They have more money than the US. They should sell some land to pay for their coverups.

Why does anyone give money to ANY church?

They're duped into believing that they should support the church, which is based on a perceived moral obligation, which stems from people's failure to be responsible for their own lives and spirituality.

Since they need religious "authorities" to act as their spiritual go-between with God, they feel they should pay for this service.

Plus, they're told that their contributions are going to some "good cause" (like brainwashing the innocent or fighting women's rights to control their bodies).

The reason people can and do give money to Catholic Churches is to help the programs run by those churches continue to function.

There are many ways to "safely" give money to Catholic Churches. The easiest is to donate only to your church/parish and not to the diocese. (Legal fees come from the diocesan coffers, not those of the individual churches.)

In the USA, donations can be specified for specific purposes and must be trackable - on your check, write a note in the memo line stating it is for parish expenses only (or something like that). This should be safe anyway - I have never worked in a church where the money collected from "the plate" went to anything other than programs (religious ed, outreach, etc.) or operating expenses of the parish.

If you are still concerned, contact your church and ask about donating tangible goods and getting receipt.

As with most churches, most Catholic parishes are expected to be self sustaining. That is, they are expected to raise the money for their own upkeep, including more than the priest's salaries and utilities. Any local programs to help the needy are funded directly by donations in poor boxes and by passing the basket during the mass' offeratory.

And, simialarly to the state funded school systems, their are rich areas and poorer areas. You may find large, ornately decorated cathedrals and more humble, run down church buildings.

If the Catholic church distributed it's wealth equally, we wouldn't find dusty, run down missions in Latin America and Africa. A wealthe Catholic, for instance, may not go to a particular church for services if it was run down, cold and leaky. They would tend to give, and give more to the pretty church or chapel nearer to where they live.

Of course, not all Catholics are that vain and shallow, just as not all Catholic priests are pedophiles and sexual perverts. By the way, OTHER denominations are plagued by charges of sexaul misconduct levied at their leadership.

Your suggestion that people should stop donating to the church, if taken that seriously, would stop a lot of good works done by a lot of good people.

I don't practice any religion, nor attend any church services other than in support of friends and family at weddings, baptisms, funerals and such. I donate regularly to United Way, some directly to the Red Cross. My wife also sends regular checks to the Shriners Hospital, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, and other charitable organizations. Some may be associated with religious organizations, but that affiliation is not one I bother to question.

I merely ask how the money is spent.

Religion is a man made institution. All denominations have some sex scandals and other scandals in their histories. If a person were to research all the various religions, he/she would probably want to start their own religion.

The Catholic Church has been in the media a lot recently so people want to point to it as the only flawed religion. When in fact, it was the first religion in America.

Are you referring to tithing? No? Okay.

If someone gives money to someone else or some charity or church they do it for reasons obviously private. What you think of them is none of our business. Every kind of (people) organization that has ever been or will ever be has had and will have some kind of corruption. Why don't you call your nearest Catholic Church and ask them what they do with the money given to their church? I suspect you are resentful of the Catholic Church in particular for some reason-- and that is also, none of our business. Can you name any other christian organization/religion that has remained in operation as long as the Catholic Church since St. Paul? Think about it.

Merry Christmas

i'm surely no longer Christian, yet i ought to answer this one...the bible says god is decrease than each and every rock, each and every limb..etc...he's no longer limited to the partitions of a church..i'm getting your element there, yet "church" is meant to be a place the place those people who have faith in the comparable ingredient can circulate and fellowship and worship their god jointly. Now, if church homes particularly have been in simple terms used for that purpose that must be spectacular...yet church homes look a place those days for the amassing of self righteous funds hungry people who desire to construct the biggest church on the block to tutor their patriotism for his or her god. "God loves me extra by using fact my church is extra effective than yours." etc...you get my element i'm specific.
