I mean come on, why would I care about what Leonardo DiCaprio or some other entertainer thinks about global warming? Who ever bestowed authority of these heavy matters onto people that simply act like someone ELSE for a living?

When it comes to politics, religion, or human welfare matters, wouldn't I be just as well off asking my plumber or hairdresser about as Tom Cruise?

What do we care what you think?
Oh wait, everybody is a person and everybody deserves a voice. The thing about rich people is, they can make a bigger fuss.
The fact is that if your plumber is more educated than Tom Cruise about the situation in Sudan or the Pope's relaitonship with Islam, sure go ahead and have a sit down with him. If Tom Cruise has had more experience stufying up on Iraq, ask him.
Regardless of employment, everyone really has the same say in theory. In practice, the richer ones just get more airtime. My advice: listen to the real experts.
...and no, Limbaugh is not an expert.

Having given up believing that the Bible contains the answer to all of today's problems and discovered that their local Church official knows less then they do, people are looking for some-one else to tell them what to believe & what to do.

This is simpler than finding out for themselves, so they are eager to whatever is fed to them by the only people they believe in = pop starts, movie stars, the radio jock, the TV, the press, your cab driver etc. etc...

A more relevent question might be 'why do entertainers risk looking like idiots by making pronouncements about subjects they know little or nothing ?'

The reason we care is because they have the power to bring to our attention some of the isasues that the media doesnt report to us. Look at Jolie,DiCaprio and Oprah and the good that they are doing by just standing up and being counted and putting their money where their mouth is.

A lot of people look at celebs as role models and if a celeb has a concern with a social or global issue they might have an influence on the pop culture's behavior and/or actions.

However I do agree with you, I don't give a damn what these people's stances are on certain issues.

Because some people are lifeless and believe they're gods. These lifeless people even try to wear the same clothes as these entertainers, or get a cell phone that entertainer has. These people are brainless and have no life.

People admire them for what they do best - whether talent, goodlooks, or just being a plain jerk. Sometimes this admiration becomes an obsession - in varying degrees. And people tend to identify to those they admire or obsessed about, so they support them. I think people just support them because they admire them - whether they go watch their movies or care about the charity that they care about.
