I am going to Vegas next week for the 3rd time and I remember reading some where that you should ask to sit down and wait for the shoe to finish before you start... I have always just sat down and started betting... What is the proper thing to do?

ask the players at the table if they are okay with you entering mid-shoe. if they are, go ahead and start betting. if not, wait until the end of the shoe.

if the players are on a roll, you don't want to be the one jumping in and messing up the cards.

My dear, when you want to be treated as a V(ery) I(mportant)P(erson), you throw money around... But when you want to be well liked amongst your fellow gamblers and the staff, you'll treat everyone as you would like to be treated... This also entails sayings like: " Excuse me, ... I this seat taken?," ... More in line of what you asked, I would take some time to sit somewhere, preferable look in games that are going, and observe how other guests interact with the staff and other people like yourself. What you ask, is a signal to me, that people start to look at themselves with more criticism then before... Another hint, some houses, will have notices outside the the doors of gamerooms, telling you the rules of conduct inside the room, how you join a game, or whatever, last tip: when you check in, ask the receptionist... You might find there's a dress code for certain games advertised.... Friendliness, politeness, honesty and good sportsmanship in case you lose will earn you credits in places you never dreamed of, and perhaps you win $ 100,000 cash, elected mr. Niceguy of the Season , Nicest customer of the hotel/casino.....I can think of umpteen things why you should act as you say you've read.... My position in life is not so cool, and I'll never see the inside of a theater let alone a casino like you have in Vegas.. I wish you good luck on your trip, and a lot of good fun...

Always just sit down. If you stand there and wait for the shoe to finish, casino heat is going to think you're a counter waiting for a neutral shoe. Casino heat gets testy in Vegas and can kick you out for any or no reason.
