with little kids, like 5, games that teach basic martial arts skils like jumping, kicking, rolling, etc are fun and engaging, and build a positive connection early.

for a ten year old, a more serious workout, with more punches, kicks, and even a few techniques.

For a seventeen year old, my thought would be to keep playing games, but raise the stakes and the skill levels. Games are just another type of drill. Keep your skills with basics, but the games, especially if they are high-stress games, like outdoor excersizes with a goal or a team riding on your efforts, create an ability to act under stress.

This is what all the games lead up to - making you able to go when you need to go.

The best workout for a 5 year old is just playing. Any type of activity is good. When I was teaching, the kids classes usually consisted of games like duck, duck, goose and 'freeze' tag. Trying to get children into a structured excersize routine will likely become boring to them. Active games that build coordination and burn callories are the way to go.

For the others, maybe check out your local Parks/Recreation Dept. They should offer a variety of classes that will provide a decent workout and might even be a fun family activity.

Good luck!

5 year olds would enjoy games like duck, duck goose and red light green light. They also games like tag. Martial arts wise, you can go over basic punches and kicks and make a martial arts obstacle course. Use rings to make rocks that they cant step out of or they'll get burned on the lave and use mats to make "caves". 10 year olds love games like soccer, kickball and can handle many structured games. 10 year olds can handle a lot martial arts wise. Punches and kicks both to the air and targets, tactics, grappling, and the obstacle course would still be enjoyed by 10 year olds. Just give them a time limit and make it more intense. For 17 year olds, some structured games like soccer and floor hockey could be fun. Other than that working out on treadmills and running on a track are good work outs. Leg lifts, pushups, situps, and other intense stretches and warm ups can become very tiring and they burn a lot of calories. 17 year olds can handle punching, kicking, grappling, forms, weapons forms, and any other intense drills you would want to do with the martial arts.

we do this in class sometimes for warm-up for a bit of fun every now and again (we are an adult class but, I think it would be fun for children too..) you get some coloured string and tie a piece around your bicep, then you partner with someone and the aim is to try and tug the other persons string, and block the opponent from getting yours, if your string gets tugged you have to do X amount of push-ups... then after a couple of minutes you swap partners, this goes for abit then we have free for all where anyone can tug anyone's string, so you have to be alert from all angles.. and you have to keep doing the said amount of push-ups if tugged.. it's quiet fun by the end of it everyone is running around the room giggling and buggered too..
