A friend in Michigan had a German Pinscher. He was a very sweet dog. They raised him from a pup and had 2 kids while he was around, and he did wonderfully with them.
The thing is, like the first answerer said, they are so full of energy, an apartment would not be my first choise with a dog like that.

You may consider a smaller dog, like a terrier. They are great friends, very smart, and can make do in an apartment.

You sound as if you would be a great pet owner, however, I have owned both kinds of dogs, and I must say, they are definately not apartment dogs. They need so much room to run, unless you can take it for a walk every 15-30 minutes.
