A female cockatiel. Make sure it is hand fed. They are small and easy to care for and can live 20 some years. In my experience I have found the female cockatiel to be the quietest of the caged birds. And when they are hand fed they believe they are people so they bond really well to their owners. Just make sure you only get one.

Stay away from Conures...they are about the same size but are known screamers.

Cockatiels are also very smart, and independent at times, so you won't need to constantly be with it. Some others types of birds suffer from separation anxiety.

I would find a good local breeder and check out what they have available...the one for you, will choose you. Put your hand in the cage, if it comes right to you and seems of a good temperment....go with it. Some males can be really quiet too, but they tend to prefer being show-offs so don't count on him being quiet for long!

GOOD LUCK!

Bourke parakeets are wonderful. The rosy variety are bright pink (the "normal" bourkes are dark brownish gray with blue and pink markings), they are slightly smaller than cockatiels, they require little more than good food and good company, and they rarely make noise except for a soft and beautiful song in the morning and at night. I have never heard of a tame bourke parakeet biting. Even the untame breeder birds rarely bite. They also cost less than $100 in most cases. A quick online search or a search on www.birdbreeders.com should help you find a breeder locally.

A hand raised cockatiel is definitely a good idea, but you have to spend a lot of time with it. It will scream its little head off if it feels neglected. They are friendly and very smart. Mine talked a lot, whistled the Mayberry theme and did a few tricks. He hated being alone in the room though and would scream "COME HERE!!" until I went and got him. As long as he was on my shoulder he was fine. We would even go outside like this. I'd clip his wings of course. The vet can show you how.

I enjoy my budgies. I live in a house now, but when I lived in an apartment I didn't have any problem. They can be noisy, chattering and whatnot, but people outside of the apartment generally don't hear anything. And they're bright and colourful and can be very smart.

For more information I would try http://www.budgietalk.com

Cocatiels are probably a good bet. Stay away from large tropical birds like parrots, cockatoos, macaws, and conures. They have loud enough voices for other birds to be able to hear them across miles of jungle filled with the squaking of other animals. Plus, some of those guys can live for 70+ years.

Go to a pet store and get you a pair of doves. They will let you handle them after a while and will coo everyday making you feel contented like they feel. They clean up easily afew times a week and eat wild bird seed like a regular outside bird.

Hi! I had a parakeet for 12 years! He was wonderful and so funny--- he talked in complete sentences!!! Also sang the song Dixie! Parakeets are not very expensive and they have a vocal cord system like a human and are very good talkers. If you do get one get it from a breeder---that way it will be young and will bond with you! If you have anymore questions please ask -- I enjoyed "sparky" very much and like I said he was 12 when he passed on--- Good luck!

a pacific parrotlet, smaller than a budgie and they talk. they only grow 4.5 inches and are quieter for apartments. I have one and he is green and blue with a violet tail. Please buy from a breeder, the bird will be hand raised and used to people. Pet store birds all have fears or have been neglected.

I advise getting a parakeet. (AKA the budgie) Get them when they are young. Budgies love toys and fruits such as watermelons, lettuce, broccoli and kiwis.
