my daughter has recently been crying and not wanting me to leave when I drop her off. it is not bullying, she likes the teacher and does well in school, I also do recess duty and am a substitute teacher there. but lately she has been real clingy and crying as soon as we get in the gym. she was fine while i sat there and she waved goodbye as I walked her to her class all seemed fine. I don't know if this is a phase maybe she is feeling lonely she has friends but we all know how little girls change their friends and feel they can only play with one friend at a time, I know they will learn as they get older you can include more friends, I have asked her if this is the problem but I see her on the playground running around and playing fine.but lately she just keeps on doodling I love you mom I see you mom I miss you mom at first I thought oh how cute but now it is like an obsession can kids develope seperation anxiety out of knowhere? Have any other parents had to deal with this?

Spend some time away from her, she needs to be away from you for a few hours a day (school.) Seeing you all the time makes you the body guard.

Here's an idea...make some special time for you and your daughter to go do something she wants to do. Go have a picnic in the park or get ice cream. I have Girl's Day with my daughter all of the time and it means so much to her to have my undivided attention. We have tea-parties where we turn off the phone and kick the boys out. We read a story and color some, play Barbie's or whatever she wants, then we make cookies and sit down to a fine tea party. This gives her the re-assurance that I am hers and that I love her. It sounds like your daughter needs to know this as she gets older. Don't ignore her pleas for you. This is what causes so many problems between mothers and daughters.

My daughter is the same age and I have been experiencing this same problem. As a toddler in preschool, she was fine and never had any problem separating from me. This past summer, she cried every day I took her to brownie scout camp and wanted me to stay. I thought it was just because it was a new experience with a bunch of new girls. She had no problems during the day, but every morning, she just wanted me to stay there and it broke my heart to leave her. I talked to the camp counselor by day 3, questioned if she wasn't participating or was being bullied or left out. the counselor said none of that was happening. She explained to me that she was just afraid that something bad was going to happen, like I wouldn't pick her up or something. I am a very responsible parent, who has never given her any reason to think that.
This year, I volunteer in her classroom one day a week, and on two occassions, she has tried to fake that she is sick, or has been crying and just wanted to come home with me. When I talked to her about why this was happening, she told me "sometimes when I see you during the day, it just makes me miss you and want to come home with you". I think it is just a stage and part of learining to separate home and school together. I talked to her teacher and was considering stopping the classroom volunteering. Her teacher told me that my daughter is not the only one in her class that does this on the day of the parent volunteering, nor is she the first. I say hang in there, give her a little extra attention at home and just talk to her about it.

yes kids can devolpe seperation anxiety. maybe something happened at school... maybe something bad...a monther worst nightmare. you need to talk to her and draw her out. ask her why she's acting the way she is. make it fun for her to talk to you though. do it while making cookies or something. sometimes kids will talk easier when bizzy. play with dolls and ask her to show you what happens at school. pay attnetion to what she draws...esp if her pictures are ones where someones crying or being hurt, or if the pictures are disturbing, even in the least bit. Tell her that no matter what her reasons are for acting this way , that you WONT get angry with her. and then DONT GET ANGRY, dont yell. If she tells you something horrible, calm her, soothe her and tell her everythings going to be okay. Letyou anger out in a place where she cant see or hear you.
If its just seperation anxiety talk to her about why she feels the way she does. Ask if something happened..if she heard a story on tv or a friend told her someting... maybe her and her friends got into a fight... whatever you do make sure you talk to her. only she can tellyou whats Really going on with her.

I think opposite than the other answers. 1st grade is the first full day of school. She doesn't sdee you ALL day. Even if you are there......Perhaps after school find a way to have some special alone time with her. My daughter pulls that on me too. It's usually on nights that I work she won't want to go to school that morning.

My son went through this for a while. The only thing you can do is walk away. She'll get used to it in time. It just takes time. I think it's just a phase children go through at that age.

Did something happen at home? Did you go away for a trip and not go with her? I had this happen when I went in for surgery and was in the hospital for 10 days but it wore off eventually.
