You cannot get surround sound out of a TV because it's not a surround sound source. Surround sound can come from a DVR, DVD Player, set top box, satellite box. You get one of these and connect that device to a surround sound system via a coax or optical audio cable and you will be all set.

if you have a cable card installed or use the overthe air tuner you would connect the surround sound receiver to the tv via a digital coax cable or an optical cable

If you have a cable box or sat box you connect the SSR to the Box via the same cables.

If you have none of these then you will have to connect the TV to the receiver via a set of rca audio cables(red and White) from the TV to the SSR if your TV has audio out jacks.

This is only for SS from the TV and not the DVD player or gaming system.
