To be a true Martial Artist? Yes. To be an effective fighter? Maybe not necessary, but still helpful.

Meditation does for the mind what weight training does for the body. The reason many martial arts classes have students meditate before class is to have them block out the stresses of the day and focus on training. Some styles like Tai Chi focus more on meditation as a way to relax the mind. Other styles, like Qi Gong require a great deal of faith in order to execute the more difficult techniques. They believe that meditation helps the mind accept these techniques and remove any doubt from the body.

Just like weight training, you can't just throw on the heavy weights and expect results. Walk into any gym and you will undoubtedly see people just going through the motions. The same goes for meditation. If you are serious, start small and work your way up. In time, you may see results such as improved awareness and faster reaction times. At least that is what I have found.

Good luck!

No it is not. Not even to be a martial artist. Is it an effective way of calming yourself? YES. Is it a good way to bring out harmony in yourself? sure... is it necessary to be a martial artist... ABSOLUTELY NOT! I know plenty of people who are amazing martial artists and None of the subscribe to that "Cheese" stuff (Chi) or meditation.
