First of all, let me say that my dog is 13 years old and Saturday she started having trouble walking, like she was getting dizzy and couldn't balance herself. That's when we started noticing that she was shaking her head a lot, leaning her head to the right to gaurd her ear, and having pain. It's obvious it is inner ear infection. Because her symptoms suddenly showed up on a Saturday evening there were no vets to go to until Monday, unless I wanted to pay $125 to walk into the emergency clinic, so I started her on baby aspirin for pain and 40mgs Amoxicillin q 12h for the infection. (5mgs per 1lb of body weight - she weighs 8 lbs) I happened to read an old post where "kgreives" advised someone that because they couldn't afford to pay the vet's exhorbitant costs for services that they shouldn't own a dog. Ignorance is everywhere. Here's my advice - take your dog to the vet whether you have all the money or not. Pay what you can before you leave then tell them they'll have to bill

$125 is nothing. We had to pay $650 IN FULL by morning when we had to bring our dog for an emergency in the evening (thank god for my in-laws!).
I know, life situations change and you don't get a dog planning to not take care of it. I try to give the benefit of the doubt when someone has an older dog. Jobs change, financial situations change and sometimes you go through hard times. no reason to get rid of your 13 year old dog. It would be doing the dog more harm to send it away from you.
Bottom line though, do you have any family or friends you could borrow from if your emergency vet won't bill? I would give your dog anything without at least talking to a vet.
Did you try callilng the emergency vet, explaining that you know the symptoms, you're familiar with ear infections, your dog is 13 and that you just need to know what to do until your vet opens?
(I hope the amoxicillin you gave her was NOT prescribed for humans!)

I'm going to tell you the same thing - TAKE THE DOG TO THE VET! You should not be giving the dog any medication not prescribed by the vet. An ear infection is not something to fool around with. It can lead to hearing loss or a more serious infection. You need to get this dog on antibiotics which only the vet can prescribe.

There is an easy solution to mix up and use as an ear wash. It works on ear infections, ear mites and is a general ear cleaner and I have used it for years.
Mix in equal parts rubbing alcohol, apple cider vinegar & water.
Fill ear canal and rub at the base of the ear to help loosen any debri, allow dog to shake her head & reapply. Do this to both ears and in a few days you will no longer have a problem.
Try to do this two to three times a day until condition clears.
The apple cider vinegar is the healing agent, the alcohol will help dry out the ear canal and the water is just to dilute the mixture.

If he does not rub or scratch that is in all probability not an infection, basically schmutz. bypass and get some ear wash (5 or so money from puppy shops or 10 from a vet) and positioned it in her ears squezze the bottom of the ear to artwork it in, the canines organic reaction will be to shake its head and that is fantastic to enable them. After get cotton balls and initiate wiping that crap out, you'll use like 20 or extra. be confident to get as a lot ear answer out as a chance yet somewhat left received't damage.

Take her to the VET. There are many different types of ear infections. She just might have too much fluid build up in and around her ear which is causing her to lose her balance. It could be something totally different from an ear infection too. She needs to see the VET

I would go to the vet also. At the very least, call them and tell them you think your dog has an ear infection. They will probably give you some drops for the ears or some type of medication. Don't let the don't suffer. :(

Request from your vet a bottle of NOLVASAN OTIC, manufactured by Fort Dodge Labs. This is a "general cleansing solution" for the cleaning of ears in dogs and cats and to aid in the removal of debris. It is relatively inexpensive. Ask yourself, what would you pay to heal an ear infection and the pain associated with it if it were you suffering?

Purchase regular saline solution. Warm it up in the microwave like a baby bottle. Test it first. I think it was about 15-20 seconds. Flush out both ears and clen out with a diaper wipe. My lab is 13 and we go through this every now and then. When they get older they get a build up. Wipe it's ears out once a week with the wipes. They also sell ear wipes at pet supply stores.
