Two years from now I plan to be qualified to enlist in the US Air Force Reserves as a RN. I want to do this to have money coming in while I do my RN to BSN. I also have about a 7K student loan that I would love to get off my back. Will I be able to get a nursing scholarship from the Air Force, have them take care of my student loan, by just joing the Reserves for now? I plan to enlist full time when I complete my BSN! Also.. if I am in school and I want to enlist in the Air Force, will they put off me going to basic until I atleast finish my associates? My ASVAB score expires this coming up summer(I made an 89) and I don't want to put it to waste. I hope my questions are clear! Thanks in advance.

yeah 89(Navy score) I don't know how they do ASVAB scores... only that it expires after two years... which is soon!

I want to enlist before then, but they won't defer basic for a year and a half will they?

I know of some students who were in the ROTC program at a 4 year school sign up for the Reserves and not have to do basic... but I think they had to do some type of camps during the summer.

Yeah. The Navy Recruiter told me that after a year's deferment, that they pay off your student loans. I just have to have all the information ready when I 'enlist', sign up, whichever. =)

Nurses don't 'enlist' they are brought in as officers, due to their education. (It also gets them a bigger paycheck.) Hence, they don't go through Basic, they go through Officer Indoctrination School.

Note: I see that there is a $20,000 bonus for Navy Nurses who complete OIS and sign a 4 year contract.

They usually don't 'take care of' student loans, however, your student loan bank may defer payments on the loan during any active service. There may be agreements within your state that may eliminate student loan debt upon completion of x number of years active service.

Talk to an Officer Recruiter about options and education opportunities. They may have several alternatives that would meet your needs.

Edit ->Sorry, I was incorrect. It is not OCS, it is "oyster school" that you would go to, Officer Indoctrination Course (OIC) which is designed for non-line officers. It is a 5 week course. They teach the basics of military drill, how to wear the uniform and military rrotocol.

The 12 week OCS course is designed for line officers to give them knowledge of the Navy (afloat and ashore), to prepare to assume the responsibilities of a Naval officer.

I retired 8 years ago from the Air Force and my job for 4 years was an Allied Health/Physician Recruiter.

Contact the nearest AF recruiter and have them give you the number for the Nurse/Allied Health Recruiter. They will give you everything you need to know.

From what I remember, you have to have a 4 year Nursing Degree for the Air Force, not 2 year degree. Chances are the Air Force will not pay back any of your loans but I could be wrong, they might have changed their policies.

Also, as a Nurse, you don't Enlist - a Nurse is a Direct Commission. People/Officers in the Medical corps do not go thru the traditional Basic Training.

Because you would not be entering as an Enlisted member, your ASVAB has nothing to do with anything. Forget about the ASVAB.

If you want an education think about going into active duty for 4 years. They'll give you hands on training in the medical field and you'll be able to take courses. Plus you'll get a good place to stay and food to eat while you are getting all this done. The Air Force has top rate housing. If you are really serious I'd think about their officer program. The Air Force is a good choice...
