Unless the rain is REALLY, REALLY bad, you can just expect a few delays.
However, since he's flying through Chicago, just thougt that you might want to know that during the holiday season, (LGA (New York City - La Guardia) and) ORD (Chicago - O'Hare) have more delays than any other airports in the country, so you can expect delays anyway. For a while, my Dad was commuting between the cities, and on the return flight (AA; ORD is one of their hubs), which was supposed to land around 7:30 PM, he usually landed around 8:30 or later.

The airlines do not cancel flights due to weather. That is the Air Traffic Controllers that cancel and delay flights. Flights mostly get cancelled due to fog, wind, snow. If it is rain, it depends on further weather conditions.

Rain won't canel a flight. However low ceilings (how low the clouds are), fog, strong wind and lightning can delay or cancel a flight. If its just rain there should be no problem, but if a storm is expected anything can happen.

Airlines only ever cancel for bad wether. When they say bad wether, they mean if it is dangerous for flying. Rain is not dangeous. He may be 10 mintitues delayed at the latest!

They won't cancel a flight because of rain. It may be delayed, but not unless it's really nasty out.

Not if it is just raining. They will, however, delay flights due to severe thunderstorms.
