is it very clean? Some cats will not poop in a "dirty" litter box.

It's behavioral. You may need to get another litter box so that he can do #1 in one box and #2 in the other.

Take the poop, put it in the litterbox, showing the cat and sayingg: Not here, Here! Check if he is peeing Ok and if he has a urinary tract infection. Clean the litterbox often and clean the area where he pooped well. If he does it again, consult the vet, sometimes they are reluctant to use the litterbox if they have a discomfort of some kind. Also, is he stressed for any reason? Any chandge in the house? Was he jealous or neglected when he did it?

Step # 1: Open the front door, grab the cat by the scruff of the neck, extend your arm out in front of you fully, drop the cat and "KICK". Only kidding. Step # 2: Keep the box really clean, like scoop the poop twice a day and change it no less than once a week. If the cat is just doing it and missing the box then you can put a wider sheild under the pan. This should help, but if it doesn't revert back to step # 1.

My cat used to do this all the time here are the reasons my vet said she could have been doing it after ruling out health problems.
1) Have you recently changed the brand of litter you use, cats such as mine can be very picky in on using one type of litter. If you have changed the brand of litter recently go back to what you were using when you cat was using the box all the time. If not your cat simply may have decided that he doesn't like that litter any more and you may need to experiment with other kinds until you find a kind he likes
2) Alot of cats won't go in a messy litter box, be sure to scoop it out at least once a day and change it at least once a week
3) If you are spaying a lot of air fresheners around the box it will not smell like your cat anymore and they will stop using it
4) Your cat could have an infection of some kind...call the vet and see what they suggest
Good Luck!!

Sometimes cats like to go in differents spots in their box and may in a way hang ten out of the box thus accidentally going on the outside of the box OR if the cat is particularily furry then he/she can get what I call willnots (for will not go there) that stick temporarily to the back of the fur only to be released later whereever your cat might travel........NOW.........if neither of these are the problem then it is time for a vet check. Male cats are very susceptible to urinary conditions, etc. and any change in normal behaviour is a common reaction to such a condition.

I can't say this loud enough people.....THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN UNCLEAN CAT.......only cats with health problems!! I quarentee you that if this is not the norm for your cat then it is because there is something wrong.

He might not like the litter. Try puppy pads around the litter box. Some cats are very picky too. If the box isnt changed every other day they wont use it. Just depends on the situation. Try putting a little dirt in the box, that encourages them to use it. Put it in on top of the litter.

One of my cats did this when he was stressed out. Is your cat stressed? Also make sure the box is super clean...cat's hate a dirty box and will poop elsewhere before the filthy box. He may also have a health problem, if it continues I'd take him to the vet. It can't hurt.

Litter box clean...Did you change your brand of litter? Not putting enough litter? There is a scent in there that he doesn't like. I would replace the box, or I would first try cleaning the box completely with bleach. Please make sure it is rinsed and dried so the cat does not have access to the bleach. Good luck.

She probably has a health issue and unless something has drastically changed in her environment that would be making her act up I would take her to the vet.
