My experience has been that getting grants for non-profits is a very difficult activity. I helped write several dozen proposals, with absolutely no takers.
You can check out http://www.grantwriters.com and Minnesota Council of Foundations has a nice "how-to" -- http://www.mcf.org/mcf/grant/writing.htm...

But you need to consider exactly what your goals are in raising money, what the purpose is, and consider all your alternatives.

Be very careful in both the grant writing and fund raising world, as there are a lot of folks that will make big promises, and want money up front to help you. Beware, do your research first, and then work with someone that you know you can trust.

Depending on the dollar values you are trying to raise, you might want to consider looking at different fundraising options:
--- good fundraising ideas: http://www.fundraisingideas.com
--- online fundraising: http://www.myopenhands.com
--- recycle cell phones to raise money: http://www.fundingfactory.com

There is also a website dedicated to researching federal grant moneys at http://www.grants.gov
