Why is it so hard to ask her? You should just be able to ask if the baby has sat up yet for her. If she says no - then say something like I thought they could before now - what did the Dr tell you? You have just opened the floor for answers. If she doesn't want to talk about it or seems uncomfortable you will be able to see that. Let her know you are there to help or listen if she needs or wants.

No, it could take up to 18 months for a baby to start walking. The baby should have a 12 month doctor appointment anyways, so I'm sure they'll ask them about the sitting and walking. Every baby develops at different times. So you can't really compare, some are later than others. But as long as that baby has a doctor and goes regularly as it should, then I don't see a problem... because the doctor will let them know or see what's going on.

My son started walking two weeks before his 1st b-day and had been sitting up for quite a while before then... but again every baby is different.

It could be lots of reasons a baby isn't sitting up by 12 months. The first that comes to my mind, is he never gives him the chance. I had a friend that had a little boy that was 10 months old before he sat up on his own. Her husband was in basic training and she was staying with her parents, who happened to have two inside dogs and she didn't want to put him down in the floor. Granted, he was probably behind on his development because of it, he's catching up just fine. I would vacuum your floors, and invite them over to play with you! Make sure there aren't underlying reasons before you assume there's really a problem. Walking on the other hand.....that's take some longer than others. My first one was walking at 9 months, my second at 13 months. My twins, one walked a week before her birthday, the other a week after his birthday. Some parents just don't understand the importance of what I call "Tummy Time." Baby's won't learn to roll over, sit up, crawl, or walk, if they're never put in the floor. I've personally known a few women that had this "problem" with their babies, and they're all fine now. Babysit for her and play in the floor, is my suggestion. After that you'll have a bit better idea of what's going on.

If she is taking the child to well baby check ups then the doctor knows what's going on. You could just ask how the doctor's appt. went. As far as not walking by 12 months ~all babies are different. I have a 13 month old who still won't walk on his own. There is nothing wrong with him; just being lazy :)

At one year, most babies are good at getting around, even if they're not walking yet. Most are better at climbing up things than getting down. Give your baby a safe environment to explore her movements. (The following information has been adapted from Dr. Segal's book series, "Your Child at Play.")

According to this article, I don't think I would worry too much just now. Give her a couple more months and see what develops.

it's ok if a baby's not walking by 12 months, my daughter didn't start until 14 months. but there's something wrong if a 12 month old can't sit up on it's own. if the mother has been keeping up with the baby's immunizations, then they should have had many checkups throughout the last year. you should ask her when her baby's 12 month checkup is, and ask her what her pediatrician says about the rate of the baby's development.

I wouldn't be too worried about him not walking yet because that is not unusual for a 12 month old BUT the fact that he is not sitting up yet is something that needs to be checked out by the dr. Just be gentle in how you bring it up to her as she will undoubtedly become "defensive" when you mention this to her.

Bring up the concern. It's not unusual for a 12 month old to not be walking, but not yet sitting up? I'd be worried.

Well, he should be seeing a dr regularly and if it's a problem, the dr should have detected it by now. If you're really concerned, do some research on milestones for babies birth to 1 year and go in prepared. And make sure she knows you only have her child's best interest at heart. Good luck!!

Not walking isn't that much of a problem at this age, but I think that they need to investigate why he's not sitting up yet- that should have happened a few months ago. If this were my problem, I would get my friend to visit someone about it.
