The needle they use is a 16 gage needle. Just like a gun the smaller the number the larger the needle. (not to scare you ) :)
All of the supplys are new every time. There is a new procedure in iowa they are doing it is called "the double reds" . The process is the same. They take you into a room for interview prick your finger and check your H & H to make sure you can do the double reds. your H and H has to be at least 40. If it is lower than 40 you are probably anemic and they wont let you donate anyway. then they start the process. they take an 18 gage needle and put it in a vein in the top of your elbow. this is called the anicubital vein. after they stick you with the needle the blood flows through tubing to a centerfuge which spins your blood and separates it plasma to red blood cells. your red blood cells are the part of the blood that carry oxygen to your body. your plasma is put into a bag by the machine. after a certain point the machine stops spinning and the machine takes the blood and puts it in another bag. not the same one the plasma was in another one. then the machine returns your plasma to you through the same needle. they do not have to stick you again. then after your plasma is back in you. the machine starts to spin again and it starts to pull your blood out again and does the same process again. 2 times hence "Double ." If your donation place does not have the double reds then you will be giving 1 pint of blood. plasma and all. Hope this helps and wasnt to long for you.

It does come wrapped. You can watch the entire process.

It is a sterile needle, rather big (in comparison to those used to give shots), with an angled hole at the end to insert into the vein.
