What amp and sub is top of the line?

McIntosh is about the very best amp you can buy. as far as subs, it depends on if you want one for SQ or one for SPL

SQ: Boston Acoustics G512 DVC. Cleanest clearerst sub i have ever heard
SPL: Pioneer 5000SPL. Holds the world record for loudest sub with 180.5 db.

That is a very vague question. Depends on your specific needs, wants, and budget. There are many very good company's that have been around for a long time, like Phoenix gold, PPI, Rockford Fosgate, Boston Acoustics, Image Dynamics, the list goes on and on. There are some very bad ones as well, and usually make outrageous claims of power handling (for speakers) or Power output. Stick with the R.M.S. ratings on the spec sheets for amps and speakers. Also the Frequency response and F.S. or resonant frequency for speakers. As for the amps the dampening factor at the board for speakers is a spec that shows how well the amp controls cone movement, esp for subs, >150 is acceptable, however everytime you wire another speaker in parallel you have 50% of a given dampening factor.
