I have a 4 year old mini shitzu and she has recently starting relieving herself on the sofa

First clean the cushion really good, some thing that kills the smell. Even if you cannot smell it is still there. Try putting bubble wrap on the couch so that it will scare her way from the couch.

I have never had one poop on the furniture, but I had one that decided to get lazy for a couple of days and do it on the floor. I took a flyswatter and popped her on the nose and very firmly told her ""NO" BAD DOG" and that was the end of it. No more problems. The nose is very sensitive so when you pop it with the swatter it will sting,and the animal will remember it. You dont have to pop it hard or beat the dog to death just let it know it felt the sting

She probably has a health issue and unless something has drastically changed in her environment that would be making her act up I would take her to the vet.

you should crate train it. when you are gone put it in the crate and when you are home let it out. she will learn the place is yours and his/hers......
