Hello,
Did you want to go to a business like Chuck "E" Cheese or Boomers? My sister did this with my 5 year old nephew and she reseved space from 11-2PM because the evening crowd is not there yet. She also did a Disney Cars theme.
But, if you do not like this idea, just have a party in your home. Since it is winter, I am thinking it would not be wise to have it outdoors where he and other children can get sick. Sure an Astro Jump would be nice, but very cold too.
Oh, and give out some party favors to the children. Something small.
Hope this helps you................ : - O

Depending on what your child is interested in, try to do a theme party. Get a simple craft project the kids can do (For example, if he likes dinosaurs, buy some dino paint by numbers or fuzzy posters or those beads things that you put the iron over.) Get a pinata filled with themed treats, serve pizza and cake. Play simple games...either ones that go with the theme, or just basic party games. Some ideas are freeze dance, balloon games (see who can pop it first, who can keep it in the air longest, etc). Make sure all the children are rewarded for their efforts and there is not one "winner". I would say not to let your son open his presents with his friends there, that way you can avoid awkward situations if he gets two of the same gift.
I'm not sure what types of places are around you, or what your budget is, but you can always look into hiring a clown or a magician, or some type of entertainment for the house. When we were little, we had a magician come and a woman who helped us make bracelets (my sister and i were both girls, so the bead lady was very entertaining!) I know there are some places that will bring live animals as well, maybe try to contact them if your son is interested.
Most importantly, remember this is a day for your son. Don't stress out over it, let him enjoy the day.

Do a backwards party. Write the invitations backwards so that they have to use a mirror to read them. Have all of the kids wear their clothes backwards. Great them by saying "Goodbye!" Eat cake first and pizza last. Play unpin the tail from the donkey (blindfolded of course).
He is the right age where he will think this is really funny (so will his friends).
Just make sure that you set up the party for no more than 3 hours and say on the invitation (party from 12:00-3:00). Tell parents on the invitation how to dress their child and if you expect them to stay. If parents are just dropping off their kids, hire one babysitter for every 4 kids to help keep the activities moving (junior high girls will do fine at this).

After the first year big family blow-out bash, our rule of thumb was always one friend per year of age. So if he has over five little friends, that will be great. I always took our kids when they were toddlers up to about 6 and let them pick the theme based on the paper plates, cups, etc. that's available for decorating. Even when they were 1 they picked these themselves. Keep it simple so you don't over stress. The most important thing is for them to have fun, and at that age, they don't need a whole lot of encouragement to have fun. If you have games, try to use only games that are designed for everyone to have fun and everyone to be rewarded with a tiny prize, rather than for there to be a winner. This will prevent tiny tantrums. Keep the food really simple, too. Once our kids reached a couple years older than your son, we would pick whatever age-appropriate movie they liked that was coming out around their birthday and we'd take them and a group of their friends to the debut of that movie. We'd all go dressed in the them and have treat bags for snacks in the theme, and then we'd go to a nearby fastfood restaurant after it for kid meals and to open the gifts. That's where the parents picked them up, and my house never had to get destroyed in the process.

I had a dinosaur party for my son, and he loved it. I let the kids make a homeade volcano, and sat dinosuars around it and then i put chemicals in it so it would explode. I cant remember the exact recipe but i think it was ammonia, vinegar and dishwashing liquid and baking soda. I put red food coloring in it so that it would look like lava. I just gave the kids small dinosaurs from the dollar store to play with and made a chocolate cake and put dinos on it also. My son loved his party

I have a six year old, and for his fifth party we had some friends over. Simple things and old fashioned things work well. Pin the tell on the donkey, and pull string pinatas are great hits. Pick a theme and run with it. Maybe Thomas the Train or hotwheels

Keep it simple but fun.. it it wasn't winter I would suggest a pony rental the owner gives the kids rides its a real hoot!
Rent a bounce house. Not sure if your area has snow or not but don't take them to a place like Chuckie Cheese you can't keep track of them and it can get scarey.
