Many years ago...in the northern parts of the USA, specifically in Buffalo, New York, they had noted that the Buffalo itself was becoming extinct.
These great beasts were killed for the wings of which they had many. You have to remember the Buffalos were large creatures and in order for them to fly, they were equipped with anywhere up to a hundred wings per side.
Legislation back then halted the killing of these fine creatures, not only because they were becoming extinct, but also because most right hand people could not comfortably eat the wings from the left side of the beast and there was a lot of wasted wings.
It was decided then that they would only use chicken wings from then on. The amount wasted because of the wings on the left side of the chicken was a far cry less then with the Buffalos. They also decided to use the left over Buffalo sauce that they had for the Buffalo wings and that is why today you get chicken wings with Buffalo sauce on them.
There is one good thing with respect to this and that is that over the years, because the buffalo wasn't hunted for it's wings anymore, evalution stepped in a removed the wings from this once proud beast.
This was dangerous back then, and could've been even for today...just think of how ticked off you are when a pigeon drops a load on your car...imagine the damage if a buffalo flew over head!

Because buffalo do not have wings, and this is why you got chicken wings.
Buffalo wings, wings or chicken wings are chicken wing sections (called flats and drums), deep fried, and coated in sauce. Although many variations on this sauce exist, the original "Buffalo" sauce is composed of only five ingredients: cayenne pepper sauce, white vinegar, butter, salt, and garlic. When using a prepared hot sauce of vinegar and cayenne pepper, the recipe is simply a mixture of hot sauce and melted butter. Most wings are prepared without breading, although this style is not exclusive. Buffalo wings are named after the city of Buffalo, New York where they originated, and the appellation "buffalo" is now commonly applied to foodstuffs other than wings that are seasoned with the sauce or close variations on it.

I had a similar problem at a London restaurant many years ago.
A medieval banquet advertised Peacock and Swan. Chicken and Turkey were actually served, which did not justify the cover charge.
