Friendly atmosphere may seem like a bit of a cliche answer, but it is the truth. What I like from a pub is to be content, happy without making an effort, and generally happy to be there! No Scallies, no hoods, no d!ckheads, no fights, no snobs! A nice decor is always good, and a nice homely feeling! You wanna be where everybody knows your name (sorry!)! Beer goggles can make a good bar better, but the best bars are ones where you are content to stay there even when sober! Good bar service too, not just fast service but also cleanliness! I've been to really nice bars that have bad toilets, and it puts me off right away! Get to Derry, really nice pubs here!!!

1. Good atmosphere but not too smokey - this will be sorted out from 01/07/2007 when there will be no smoking in pubs in England.
2. Good welcome, which really goes with good atmosphere - people need to be friendly there.
3&4 Good food and good service if its one that I eat at
5. Good beer, no point going to a pub that the beer taste disgusting at. They have to be able to keep good beer and look after it.

Good beer garden in the summer; nice warm cosy inside (pref roaring open fires) in the winter; not too crowded so don't have to queue for half hour everytime I want a drink; good atmosphere, everyone having a laugh and a good looking barman never goes a miss

Good service is paramount
Good bouncers - if you get spoken to badly on your way in, you may as well not go in at all!
Good menu choice - light bites to main meals
Good choice behind the bar - cocktails, wine, alcopops, beers etc
Good music that suits the clientele and venue

It's odd, after what people have been saying, that pub owners seem to want to rip the guts out of perfectly good pubs, turn them into shoddy, characterless, brightly over-lit or dark and gloomy 'bars', preferably identical to dozens of others, install deafening sound systems, sell crap beer and employ a bored manager to run it all.
Strange.
