The word solipsism (Latin: souls, alone + apse, self) is used for two related yet distinct concepts:

* An epistemological position that ones own perceptions are the only things that can be known with certainty. The nature of the external world — that is, the source of ones perceptions — therefore cannot be conclusively known; it may not even exist. This is also called external world skepticism.
* A metaphysical belief that the universe is entirely the creation of ones own mind. Thus, in a sense, the belief that nothing 'exists' outside of ones own mind.

Yes. Basically, it's "The Matrix" theory.

I always discard that possibility whenever discussing philosophy. It serves no additional purpose than to end the discussion prematurely on the basis that we aren't omniscient. I assume two things when discussing reality:

1) We exist, and the universe exists. "It's there."
2) Simple observation by the five senses (with help from tools if neccessary) is correct. (i.e. I'm a foundationalist, not an infinitist).

That's funny, I always think the most flawed...historian if you will...is the human mind's recollection of it's own experiences. It's completely subjective. So I guess nothing is certain, is it?

Yes, and I hate it.

Let me find a link for it. This one is a little briefer than wiki http://www.humantruth.info/solipsism.html

Basically it's that you "choose" your own reality.

It was mentioned in my American Lit class, but I never really got the concept.
