Most of the modern Cell Phones actually have a GPS capability in them and will provide a location. The number is then routed to a database service that identifies the proper Emergency provider for that area and routes the number to that location.

GPS in cell phones is pretty worthless. The GPS chip provides absolutely no info to a 911 center. No 911 center can afford to be hooked up to a orbiting satellite.

Location is determined by tower triangulation assuming the 911 center is equipped to handle that technology. GPS is not involved.

When you dial 911 from a cell phone the signal will be directed by however the cellular company has programmed the cell tower based on instructions from the areas 911 centers. Chances are you'll go to the correct 911 center, but it is not always correct because of jurisdictional boundaries.

the one time i called 911 from my cell the call was routed to the county sheriff office and they asked me what town i was in to determine if that town had a police force or was a sheriffs patrol area, the town had a police force so my call was re routed to the local police..this was many years ago before the gps became almost standard in phones
