I have been wanting to change my last name for a long time. mainly because I really hate my Father. But my parents severely object to it even though I'm almost 19 and moving out in two weeks. They have said that they will take me out of the will if I do this. However, I'm not really sure my Father even has a will and that it's possibly just a way of intimidating me. Should I do it anyway?

Ask to see the will

Why go through the expense, when your name will change when you marry anyway? It's not going to change how you feel about your Father, or anything that happened. But, if it's what you really want, then don't let some threat stop you. Enjoy adulthood and do what you want!

Being of age, you really should make your own decisions and not base it on a will (if there is one). If you think it's for the best to change your last name then do so but remember, if you want to keep the peace, all you have to do is wait until marriage and then they can't really blame you for taking your hubby's name and everyone is happy!

You just said you want to change your name because you hate your father, so yes it would be considered hateful to change your last name against your parents wishes. If you are changing your last name and you are not getting married, then you are basically disowning your family. If you want to do it, then that's your business, but if you do then you should expect your father to disown you too.

Well sweetheart if you really hate your father that much, then who cares if he's leaving you anything. If you don't want his name then you should not want his material accummulations.

Changing your name does not change your parentage or who you really are so what's the sense.

Anyway being a woman you will change your name when you get married, you lived with it for 19 years why not tolerate it a few more. That way your parents won't be upset.

When you get married, you may want to change your name. Why do it twice. A rose by any other name smells as sweet. You are defined by who you are, not by your name.

If you want to change your name, then it is your prerogative, but I don't think that addresses the real issue. Since your birth name is on all your school transcripts, and birth certificate, changing your name could create more problems than it cures.

It's you decision. You are an adult and your parents have to understand that. It is their turn to do some maturing. They simply forgot the type of daughter they raised and I mean that in a good way. Here your parents have gone and raised you to be independent and when the time comes and you are independent, well they are panicking,
"What did we raise?"

You are over 18 and can change your name if you wish. It is a personal choice and should not be considered hatred, unless it is hatred that is driving your choice. It is YOUR decision to make!

WOW...

That seems to be a heart felt desicion. I understand how you'd feel, and I'm sure there are ton's of reason's why you'd want to do it.
Nevertheless.. I'm a parent, and I'm sure they said those things with hurt feelings.
Do some serious SOUL searching, and give it time. Before you jump into it...

Your final question...."How can we persuade Harry's mothers and fathers of Harry's selection, with out inflicting extra kinfolk problems?" answer: you are able to no longer. yet...it relatively is the ingredient. it particularly is THEIR call, they considered it and needed it hyphenated and got here up with this very, very unusual final call. His mothers and fathers will would desire to settle for the very incontrovertible fact that their son is an grownup and could make his own judgements. i could tell your quickly-to-be husband to no longer circulate into opposite from this in any respect. specific, this unusual final call IS hurtful and is protecting him from getting promotions and/or being extra effectual. heavily, there have been books written in this. could we ever in a million years % a president named Harry Adams-Apple? NO. action picture stars substitute their names each and all of the time to lead them to "sound extra useful." Many effectual business enterprise human beings have "wide-spread" names.....Donald Trump, invoice Gates, invoice Clinton, etc. Your call can (and does) make a difference, distinctly in the business enterprise international. i could proceed to speak along with his mothers and fathers. tell them (or your fiance ought to) that he means no disrespect or shame, yet that it relatively is the way it is going to be. they are going to soften up.
