Yes, Lexus is Toyota's luxury division.

It's even more correct to say Lexus IS Toyota. They are barely seperated except by name. Two are interchangeable and up until very recently the same cars we get as Lexus models here were sold as Toyotas in Japan, examples include the Lexus IS300, which in Japan was sold as Toyota Altezza and the Lexus SC300/400 which is known as the Toyota Soarer in the home market.

The Japanese car companies very shrewdly realized that Americans are image consious and would not be keen on paying $55,000 for a luxury sedan with the same name as a $10,000 economy car even if the reputation for reliability and quality was there. After all, what would the Mercedes-driving neighbors think.

So Honda was the first to come out with it's "Acura" brand for the near-luxury and luxury cars it sells here and in Europe. Toyota soon followed with "Lexus" and Nissan with "Infinity".

For all intents and purposes Acura = Honda, Lexus = Toyota and Infiniti = Nissan. None were ever seperate companies, respectively, they are one and the same.

The cars are becoming more and more exclusive though. It's not entirely accurate to say a Lexus ES300 = a Camry, yes they are based on the same platform, but they are not identical at all. Similar, but not the same. The Toyota Avalon is based on a lengthened front wheel drive Camry platform and has NO connection to the Lexus LS. The RX300 is based on a modified Camry platform, like the Highlander, but again it is not the same vehicle. The Highlander is longer and more spacious inside and basically a similar vehicle but there are more than enough differences that they each appeal to a different clientele.

Similar analogies are Acura as to Honda, Infiniti as to Nissan.

Sell your Toyota and buy a Lexus. If you want your car to look good, do it the REAL way. No one can make my 2009 SLK 55 look like a SLR.

Yes, and they sell many of the same cars. Except the Lexus typically comes with nice upgrades. (Highlander = RX), (4Runner = GX), (LandCruiser = LX), (Camry = ES Series), (Avalon = LS Series)

Some of the tops are different, but same structure underneath.
