The breadboard derives its name from an early form of point-to-point construction. In the early days of radio, amateurs would nail copper wire or terminal strips to a wooden board (often literally a board for cutting bread), and solder electronic components to them. Sometimes a paper schematic diagram was first glued to the board as a guide to placing terminals, components and wires.

This is as you've said a board with many holes in it for making prototype circuits.

Its called a bread board because it looks like the board Mum's use for rolling dough to make bread.

Electronics engineers don't have an imagination or a sense of humour that I know of or can recognise

I reckon it should be called a holy board or a dart board....LOL...

It is just a board with a bunch of holes in it for making temporary circuits. The main use I ever saw for them was in analog computers, like for calculating artilleray trajectories and the like.

Look up analog computers and they'll probably have some pictures of bread boards.

In fact it is known as Bread board sometimes referred to as wish board.
