I have chickens that I call my pine tree chickens.
Every time I tried to lock up chickens, something gets into the coop and kills them. I lost track on how many birds were lost from coons, skunks, and even big dogs that went through, under or over the fence, that even had a top on it. I also lost pheasants from people stealing them.

All my chickens are loose now, and sleep up in trees to get away from predators. In the morning they will fly down and resume their day on the ground.

If you have a safe place that you want your chickens to stay at, you have to catch your birds and confined them for at least 4 days. Once they get use to calling this place home, they will come home to roost.

Do you quite consider this can be a zinger query that disproves evolution? If so, then that's so unhappy. Eggs got here approximately lengthy earlier than chickens. The animals that developed into chickens laid eggs. These animals step by step converted. Each new release was once virtually equal to the prior new release however had mild variations established on genetic model. This is going for the eggs as good. Over time you grow to be with an animal that's plenty unique than what you began with. The identical is going for bushes and seeds. If you research ancient geology and paleontology and biology you could be taught plenty of very exciting matters that experience truly international programs.

Chickens instinctively want to roost in trees for safety. Predators love to eat them because they taste like chicken.

They'll come down in the morning on their own because there's not much for them to eat up in a tree.

If you don't want them to roost in the trees, feed them in the coop then close them in when they go in. Take a stout pair of scissors and cut the primary feathers off of one wing, usually leaving a couple inches of each feather. The primaries are the long flight feathers.

If you do this, however, you will have to keep them in the coop. Without primary feathers they lose the ability to make short flights and are vulnerable to dogs, cats, weasels, etc. Occasionally you get the weird chicken that can still get up into a tree with one wing trimmed. Trim the other wing or make fried chicken--your choice.

Can rooster get depressed. A chicken showed up for 4 days and he wouldn t come home to his tree during that time. Now she is gone and he just stays in the tree and won t eat.

I would make some loud sounds near the tree and they will get spooked and fly out or maybe put the garden hose on low and spray the tree branches lightly and they should fly out. Or possibly throw some chicken feed on the ground or some food that will entice them out of the trees.

Do you have a fenced in place? When they are hungry or thirsty they will come down on their own. I built a coop at the base of the tree and usually they are there before I wake up. Guess it is a lot warmer than being in the trees all night especially in the winter.
