I'm installing a credit card machine at work - the instructions say to ensure its connected to a PSTN line, never RS232.

a phone line is PSTN.

plug a phone in, pick it up and if you've got dial tone, your ok.

(assuming your not using an IP phone or something )

Credit card machines just plug into any telephone socket, nothing complicated.

The instructions with your machine are slightly nonsense...all they needed to say was plug into a phone socket.

Hope you get it working before Christmas, i hate for you to miss out on those extra sales !

Can you plug a regular BT approved phone into the socket ? If so, it is PSTN. RS232 sockets are more square, and too small to take a BT plug. They look like a small version of a network socket.

PSTN stands for Public Service Telephone Network. This means that you will need a dial tone and that is the exact same connection as what you would plug a phone in...

RS-232 connection will not fit in a regular wall phone jack.

if you are able to make and recive calls as normal then you have a pstn line, rs232 are very outdated now so it is highley unlikley thats what you have you can call service provider to be sure, you can attach a fax machine but it may cause interfernce so i would advise you not to!

If it's a normal telephone socket, then it will be PSTN (Public services telephone network)
