I am a photographer and on ocassion, I get asked to shoot at weddings and such. This weeked I had to shoot a wedding, but the priest did not allow flash photography inside. This is NOT a famous church, rather a small community temple, and this is NOT a well lit place. It has low stained glass windows all around (which burned when I exposed for the couple) and very orange tungsten lights... I was forced to use ISO1600 with my fastest (f/1.4) lens. I did OK, but I am wondering WHY DO SOME CHURCHES PROHIBIT FLASH??? Maybe a priest can help answer this...

I agree that the use of flash photography is disrespectful of the service being performed, but many venues do not allow flash photography mainly because its distracting. Since this was such a dark place to begin with, imagine what a distraction your flash would have been. It would be like lightning bolts! It sounds as if you are a little peeved about this (and rightfully so), but don't take it personally. I was married in a protestant church and they didn't allow flash photography either. Many churches do allow flash photography before and after the service if you ask them prior to the wedding date. I do photography too and when I have shot weddings I found that you can reason with the proper people a lot more successfully weeks in advance rather than in front of a disgruntled bride.......

It's distracting to have the ceremony and have someone flashing a picture. I"ve never been to a wedding (and I've been to a few of different religions) where if it's inside a church or building, the photographer is allowed to flash pictures. It was allowed at an outdoor wedding, and it was distracting since we found outselves watching the photographer try to angle up for that perfect pic of the bride as she started to sway, then on what was happening or what the priest was saying.

A wedding is suppose to be a moment where nothing else but distracts from the seriousness of it. If flashes were to be going off it would distract everyone involved as well as the guests. You can do just as well with reenacted shots afterwards

You may think of a wedding as a photo opportunity; you are a photographer. But to members of the church, it is a sacred ceremony during which the attention should be on God.

Just plain too distracting!

The B & G are supposed to be the feature.

IT IS A RELIGIOUS SERVICE - NOT A PUBLIC SPECTACLE!
