A close family friend just told me he's HIV +. He is a gay male who has lived a risky life.

I didn't know what to say when he told me and I feel bad. He asked me not to be afraid to hug him but I was so caught off guard that I just stood there.

What have you done when someone just sprang some surprising news on you?

It's okay to feel too shocked to say anything and it's okay to go back to him and let him know how you felt when he told you. Don't be afraid to hug him- he probably needs to feel loved now more than ever before.

With the advancements in medicine, people who are HIV+ can lead successful and productive lives and may not ever have a symptom of AIDS but it does not make it any less devastating to get the news.

I have a friend that's HIV+ and it was a shock but I had to realize that it didn't change the person he was. He was still my friend that I cared about and he was still human. Nothing has changed except that I worry a little more when he's not feeling good or whenI haven't heard from him in awhile but our friendship is still the same. We are never in a situation where I would be exposed and he would never put me in that situation. If it would make you feel better, maybe go to your local pharmacy and ask if they have any pamphelets or info on HIV, the more you knowabout the disease the easier it is to understand your friends situation, good luck to you both and Happy Holidays.

My godmother is HIV+ and has been for many years now.

Please be there for him as he needs you and your family and friends and all the support he can get. Imagine being in his shoes. Do not be afraid to hug him and just talk. Can you even imagine what is going through his head?

Family is really all we have in this world. Show him you care!

Try to remain as calm as possible. And just be like I'm sorry to here that. Because it's not your fault he contracted HIV. It was his fault he lived a risky life.

Normally i'm in shock but after I try to find out if theres anyway i can help them after hearing there news.

But don't try to make it sound like you pity then that seriously hurts there self-confidence.
