Are hotels and hostels generally acccepting of small dogs? Which European countries may be particularly unaccepting? Any advice and previous experience would be much appreciated!

Not a good idea if your are travelling between countries.

Some countries will put pets on quarrantine to make sure that they are not bringing in any weird diseases.

Thats a horrible way for your otherwise healthy pet to spend Christmas.

Do your research first, or ask the airlines (they dont always know). Live the pet at home when in doubt.

Some animals (cats or dogs) get traumatized when transported in the baggage compartment and may attempt to escape upon landing in some unknown stop overs.

If you live within the North American continent, life will be easier for you. Travel by car or van and simply use the petfriendly accomodations.

It doesn't matter whether the dog is large or small it can be difficult to travel throughout Europe with animals. The worst bit will be not accommodation (you would need to check with hotels first though) but the passport can cause problems as you travel between countries. You need to find a vet before entering various countries and before travelling home and take it from me and my experience it is not easy to find a vet near Calais. If you are going to travel through Europe why not hire a motorhome then dog will be okay. The vet I used was in Lyons and the phone number is: 004 78742961. Nothing was too much trouble for that vet and he wasn't too expensive either. Hope this is helpful. If you do take the dog France loves dogs. Enjoy your holiday.

Not sure about abroad, but I've not found a lot of trouble travelling with a dog. Just reassure the owners that you won't leave him/her alone. It is easier out of season to negotiate a dog deal with hotels and avoid the larger chains.

You can buy books which detail pet friendly lodgings, but I've never needed these.

I`m from Norway, and I know it`s not easy to travel with a dog there. You cannot take your dog on a bus, but I think the train is ok. In Hungary ther are very dog friendly, but the require you to have your dog on a headcollar when using puclic transportation. Oh, and that`s right, most countries need proof of rabies vaccine, with test results from an autherized lab.
