In Jan 2004 Bush spoke of his guest worker plan, saying, "New immigration laws should serve the economic need of the country...If an American empolyer is offering a job that American citizens are not willing to take, we ought to welcome into our country a person who will fill that job...."

So...let me get this straight...All an employer needs to do is advertise jobs at pay lower than most Americans-- who cannot feed, clothe, house, and raise their families on the minimum wage--could accept. When no US applicant turns up, companies would be free to go abroad and hire Africans, Asians, Latin Americans to come to the US and take the job Americans could not take. Does anyone else think this is as scary as I do? It's no longer an issue about Rep. vs Dems (I myself am a tree-hugging liberal)...it is the elite/corporations vs. the rest of us. Agree/Disagree...what are your thought

I hate it when he says stuff like the economic need of the country when it's really just cheap labor for big business.

With all the insourcing and outsourcing and businesses moving overseas and masses of illegals for cheap labor....Have any of you found your prices being lowered? Do you find the quality of your goods to be better? Have you been charged less for an outsourced service who has cheaper labor costs? Is the quality of your services better? I haven't. I'm paying more for everything yet the pay hasn't increased. We have to pay more because of the "global market"....like gas...we can cut back our usage but as long as people in China or India increase their usage...I still have to pay more. I'm paying twice as much for a pair of Levis that used to last years and now I'm lucky if the belt loops stay fastened in the first 3 months. Lucky if they hold up a year. A furnace that used to be a 1 time investment now has a life expectancy of 10 years. I used to pay 25 bucks to see a Dr......now I pay 55 to see an assistant. I recently had to buy a refridgerator. They had the little plastic pull out bins. (they used to be metal) They taped them so they wouldn't bounce around during shipment. Yet the bins broke just from removing the tape. And I'm supposed to think they are going to last? They sent me replacements but inclosed what they would have cost me were I to buy them and they wanted 75 bucks for the tiny meat bin. I mean please.....I used to buy decent LEATHER boots for 100-150......now they want that for plastic.....it just doesn't wash. Wages are stagnent or going down for most....educated or not, while everything else is going down. (Except in some technology) Sorry....but video games and computers aren't going to be much good if you can't afford a home and utilities and be able to eat on what cheap labor pays.

I don't have a problem with immigrants filling positions here if there is a TRUE shortage of laborers willing to take the job but I think it is very important to insure that citizens get first choice. There will be companies trying to find excuses to bring in low price labor and to prevent this all immigrants that would fill such positions must be legal so that they are not in a position to be exploited ie. they can go to labor boards without fear. I am a Conservative but for the most part agree with your assessment of the out come.
Before declaring work force shortages I think that welfare recipient's should be faced with the choice of taking the available jobs or lose of benefits.

Finally , someone who sees it for what it is ( and a Democrat at that ) . How long has it taken for people to see what Bush has been doing to this country for the last 6 years .
Although that isn't the only thing ( Iraq ) , it's among one the worst .
The sad part is we will be living with this for years to come and long after we are gone our children will be paying for this man's choices .
He has been working hand in glove with Corporations ( who largely put him office ) since the beginning of his terms as President .
You are so right about Employer's taking advantage of illegal immigration and new laws that they want passed .
They want to phase out the good wages that the Middle Class need to live and raise their family's , in this country .
They have sent the best jobs overseas and now the only jobs that are left , you can't live on .
This country is being dumbed down , with poor education and made poor with low paying job's .
Lou Dobbs is right , the Middle Working Class is under attack by Washington !!!!

Well, the quote doesn't say anything about lower than normal paying jobs. So I disagree with you on that. We just assume that the jobs are going to be really low paying because of illegals, but if they come hear legal because of that program then lower than normal paying jobs would be wrong. I'm not afraid at all, just concerned as to why some americans dont want to take whatever job is avaliable. If a group of workers dont like what they are getting paid, they can go on strike and possibly get higher wages. I still say we need a 3rd party.

Bush is pragmagist and realizes hispanic vote not one to throw away to the democrats because 30% of the Mexicans alone are conversative republicans and hes knows it. Yet, the republican party will be tied down to the South if they dont go for the Latino vote with immigration long term. Its poltical pandering by both parties its disgusting. We need immigration overhaul of the whole system. I dont see nothing fixed in the next 6 years unless the economy stalls then you will see a drastic changes, or thier such a shortage of workers that they will be forced by ecomonic more than poltical pandering to open up immigration flows from Mexico.

Yea, verily.
It's strange. The word 'illegal' seems to have taken-on a special meaning when applied to the outlaws pouring across our borders.

Pity for folks worse-off than ouselves has clouded our reason when faceing the problem of how to 'fix' the situation.

The first priority should be to stop the flow, plug the leaks. If it takes a fence or wall - so be it. But it must be done now - not after another twelve million of those unfortunates enter the country. We can't continue to take-on the problems of the whole planet.

I agree with you 100% - Basically Bush is saying we need the immigerants to do all the crappy jobs that make the world go around, because he doesn't want to get his hands dirty - but let the immigrants live on $1000 a month. He most have failed econics in college

he will cave fore specific. that's all with regard to the Benjamins for him and his pals, the fat cats. i think of this element has been blown out of proportion. This u . s . is made out of immigrants and the numbers of them turning out to be (and desirous to grow to be) criminal are intense. and that i hate to work out that Mexicans have become the scapegoats basically because of the fact they're the ideal in selection. We do want decrease priced exertions. people are egocentric and spoiled. we don't prefer to paintings out interior the nice and snug sunlight or clean loos for decrease than minimum salary. those everybody is taking jobs we don't prefer. Why are we retaining that against them? Now I agree the entire sneaking into the rustic element is the incorrect thank you to pass approximately it, yet there's a ideal technique to get right here and those that make the main of that could desire to no longer be chastized or grew to become away for it.
