The most popular ones at our recent office party were a stack of high-quality chocolate bars tied with gold cord, movie passes and a unisex knitted hat. Our limit was $10; you could punch things up to $15 easily with a few more chocolate bars, more on the passes or a store-bought hat rather than a hand-knitted one (the knitter only counted the cost of the yarn and not her hourly rate). Other happy recipients have gotten a big box of assorted snack foods like potato chips and corn chips, and the screaming monkey demonstrated on the Leno show last week.

I would suggest a gift card to a movie theater. You could also go with a gourmet food gift like candy or popcorn. Just wrap it in a creative way. The whole idea of a Yankee swap is for people to pick up the gifts and shake them and examine them. You want to try to fool people!

Give a gift card to a restaurant. That's universal.

In the box, I'd also put in some loose tokens (from a video arcade). When they shake it, it'll sound like money. They'll never guess your gift!!!
