I always use advantage or frontline. Frontline (and I think advantage as well) will protect against fleas for 4 weeks and ticks for 2. I use it all year round - 4 weekly in winter, and 2 weekly in summer (just to make sure). Frontline as you probably know is available in a spray form, as well as a drop form. I use the spray on my little ones, but I always use the drop form on my big one (bullmastiff sized). There are also montly heartworm tablets such as Sentinel that contain a substance that makes your dogs unappealing to fleas. That works well as well but it does not provide any tick protection and since ticks can kill your dogs I prefer the frontline. Besides which, you can now get annual jabs to protect against heartworm so it's hardly worth the effort. :)

My big dog never gets fleas by the way. Never ever, and he's an outside dog who gets walked every day of the year. I put that down to the frontline!

I give the heartworm/flea/tick combo pills for my dogs. Each pill is about $12 where I live but well worth it and they're chew tabs so the dogs like them. Plus you only have to give one a month. It's called Sentinal. I should mention though that this is preventative maintenance, it will not kill fleas already on the dog.

Ask your vet.

Here's a great link that gives a brief overview of a lot of the products out there.

Frontline is a great product. You can get it at your petstore, or you can see if your vet carries it also. You just have to buy the right weight range for your dog. Frontline is my favorite, but other good products are Advantix, and Revolution. But Revolution is flea prevention AND heartworm prevention, so you will have to ask your vet about it. Good Luck.
Cute picture, by the way.

Advantage or Frontline have worked very well for me. I apply it starting in May and then apply Advantage every 6 weekd through November. I have never had a flea problem.
I have Newfies.

Never use flea "dips"...they are harsh on the coat and only last a few days.

I would NEVER use Sevin dust on my dogs either. I have seen too many dogs AND cats get very sick from it!

Frontline. Flea dips are good too, I hate using chemicals, but sometimes you must. I tried every "natual" spray there was, but frontlines the only thing that worked. For your yard, buy some nematodes found online, and also bomb your house (sweep the furniture cushions out, and get your corners for dustbunnies (eggs love dustbunnies and furniture). This will prevent them from still infesting you. Once there are fleas on your pet, there is an infestation of eggs in your home....Act quickly!

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T LISTEN TO THE LADY THAT SAYS TO USE THE GARDEN DUST!! THAT STUFF IS TOXIC!! ARE YOU CRAZY!! I have a Great Dane and Dr. Pohl recommended that we use Advantage on a regular basis due to the fact that we have a cat that goes in and out a lot. He kept getting them from her. It seems to be working well, on the rare occasion that he does get them we jut put him in the bath tub and give him a good one-over with some flea-tick stuff from the vet (its medicated -he has allergies) and take a sigh of relief that we defeated another season!! Good luck to you... we know what a struggle it can be. My suggestion to you is to keep them on all year round.

Advantage has kept our 2 Goldens free of fleas and ticks for years even when they spend a lot of time outside in the summers.

Here in FL fleas are a year round issue. Frontline works great for us. Strangely enough I have never seen a tick here. Wish it repelled gators!

I buy my frontline from "petshed" in Australia I think but has same stuff in it as US stuff. Lots cheaper!.....I mean LOTS!
