Oh man...I get your pain! I too, am in the same predicament with my Cairn, named Brodie...he is 1yr and 4mos old.

At first he started chewing the towel I put in his crate (he's crate/potty trained). Then it was his toys. Then it progressed to my laundry and shoes. Then it was my furniture. Now, if I let him play in the backyard he chews on the tree bark, whimsical garden stuff (gnomes, signs, etc), the chair pads, and the garden hose.

He destroys everything!! I gave him tennis balls but he destroys them...I mean, rips the fluffy covering off and then tears the ball in half. He has torn almost every toy I have bought for him, and makes light work of any small dog sized chew or rawhide.

But...today I bought him a "large dog" bone thing from Hartz...it's beef basted and has a marrow. (I got it at Wal-Mart...it's called Ribeye Bone or something - $2.98.) This thing is huge...it looks like a human femur! At first he went around the house trying to find a place to hide it...(and I kept finding it and he'd get mad...it was kinda funny.) But then I wrapped it in foil, and cracked it down into smaller pieces, quarters to be exact. He sat happily gnawing on the smaller bone for at least 2 hours. Plus he has 3 more!

I'm thinking he's bored when he chews...because he's not teething anymore. Smaller dogs demand ALOT of attention...more than I ever thought. I'm thinking obedience school will teach him restraint...for Brodie and your dog. But in the meantime, I think big dog bones will do the trick.

Good Luck!

My Walker Hound is 8 months old and was chewing everything in sight for the first 7 1/2 months. I just kept on her by scolding her with a firm NO! Then giving her one of her chew toys and praising her when she took it.
All was well until this morning when I caught her on the bed chewing a cork coaster! Keep on trying! Remember, unconditional love =0)

cairns are notorious for chewing when they are puppies .you could crate train him and that might curb it but you will not break him of it totally untill he is out of the puppy stage .I know i had a cairn for 11 yrs untill she passed away on my kitchen floor one morning .she will forever remain my faithful and devoted friend in my heart and in my memories of her .I miss her very much . i now have a new friend but it never can replace her in my heart .He will just be in a different place in my heart. good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

Bitter apple spray, but try some rawhides, mini ones for his size. The flavored ones will be his favorite over the household stuff he li kes now. My dog has the same problem, but hers is separation anxiety and when we're not there. Until you can figure out why, I suggest watching very closely. I would definitely try the flavored chewies, and they even have flavored tennis balls!
