Britain's first petrol pump appeared in Shrewsbury in 1913. By 1921, pumps were in general use across the country. Before this, petrol was sold in cans. Drivers bought the cans and filled their own tanks. The empty tank would be returned to the shop and a deposit refunded.
However, the phrase, 'Buy it at the Pumps' was used to sell a range of guide books to motering in England, called 'The Shell Guides which' were first published in the 1930s, edited by John Betjeman and sponsored by the Shell oil company.
Petrol Pumps were the first little shops to appear in the countryside. They had kiosk's which up to that point had not been seen outside of large railway stations in major cities - and allowed drivers to pay for petrol and other items from thier cars, without having to park and walk inside a building.

Petrol. I take it you're in the US? If so, what you call gas, short for gasoline, we call petrol, short for petroleum spirit. In the UK, gas is just that - a gas, and usually refers to the highly flammable stuff that powers the cooker, oven etc.
Hope that helps :)
