It means your muscles are binding up. Many people fail to exercise and/or stretch their back muscles. Therefore, any slight movement can cause them to be pulled or tear with everyday movement. A good massage can loosen the muscle(s), then I asuggest you learn to stretch and exercise the back muscles in order to avoid these problems in the future. Your back and muscles will get worse as you age. Increasing the muscle strength now to properly align it will avoid serious problems later.

Assuming there is no growth or torn muscle. It is a muscle that has cramped up. It can be caused by a number of reasons stress, strain, or even holding your body in an unbalanced position, IE limping. A doctor can prescribe a muscle relaxer, a massage therapist can massage it out, a physical therapist can help you learn to change your body mechanics so they don't return.

A knot is a tension in the muscle... this can be caused from stress or physical activity. A massage would help you or acupuncture.
