My accountant sent me some mail as a tif file which I couldn't open at first. Eventually solved the problem. Now have to send them some information on a Word document format which I assume they will be able to open as a tif file.

A tiff file (.tif) is an image format. A text file would have to be saved as an image first and then saved out as a .tif file. It is indeed possible to do this, as it would also be possible to save an image of the text file as a .jpg file. Convert the text file to an image file.

Sounds like you could use an explanation.

Word is a word processing program and is generally used to created formatted text which can be edited with a word processor. It normally receives an extension of .doc which allows the computer operating system to recognize it. MS Word can be saved in similar word processing formats such as .rtf (rich text format), .txt (text), html (hyper text markup language), etc.

A tif on the other hand is usually created by a painting program such as the paint which comes with the OS, or any of several graphics programs like corel draw, broderbund, adobe, etc...

.tif is the extension the operating system uses to know it is a graphic. Tifs are generally not editiable in the same way a word document is. They are like paintings and you could make some changes, but the computer cannot interpret the text as text -- it sees it as a picture.

Now, as to the document you sent to your accountant. They should have ms word installed and should be able to see what you sent them back using that.

hope this helps.

You can open your file, use Control+A to select all, copy, then open Paint, and paste. From Paint, click File, Save as. You can save as a GIF, TIF, or JPG.

As suggested by another answerer, you could save your Word document as a txt file. I'm assuming that fancy style and formatting are important to you in this case.

Why did your accountant send the file as a tif? Surely he must use a program which can be saved in such a manner that you could open it and import into Excel or Access.

The only way I know of doing that is to take screen captures of the individual pages... Press ctrl printscreen and you should get a .bmp of the screen saved in the memory... Go to Paintbrush or Paint or whatever they're calling it these days, then press ctrl V to paste the screenshot into the program, then save it as a .TIF

The only other thing you could try is saving it as a .txt file... But then you won't be able to use any formatting or graphics... Just text... It's a lot more universal and all computers should be able to read it...

Hope this helps!
