I've had alot of success with the "Sleep Easily" method:
http://www.sleepeasily.com/
And I had very big problems with insomnia. What happened was my sleep cycle became disturbed from playing video games late at night. I had difficulty falling asleep before 2 am because of it. I started to use ambien (big mistake). Although this allowed me to fall asleep earlier, it lost effectiveness over time and required more and more frequent use and higher and higher dosages. Eventually, I could not fall asleep before 6 am or even later without a large dose of the drug. I had horrible side effects, memory loss etc. Finally I quit using it altogether. But, by that time, my sleep cycle was completely destroyed. Months and months after I stopped taking the drug, I couldn't get more than a couple hours of sleep a night.
I started using the "Sleep Easily" program and it helped me ALOT. Today, I have pretty close to a normal sleep cycle.
Stay the hell away from sleep medications.

do you have someone to talk to at the end of the day? every night my husband and i sit for about an hour or 2 and just talk about everything that is on our minds from the day or even things that are going to happen in the weeks to come. i used to be just like you i couldn't shut my mind off long enough to sleep right. once we started talking every night i found that i could sleep cause i got it all out before i laid down to sleep. we set this time aside after the kids are in bed and we will not be disturbed. have been doing it now for 4 years and works great. good luck and happy holidays=)

Putting a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow before you go to sleep may help.
Also, have you ever tried any natural flower remedies? Bach's Rescue Remedy can be used to "comfort and reassure" and actually works very well. I use it sometimes and find it very helpful. You can buy it from most chemists and supermarkets. Check out this website: http://www.bachshop.com/customer/home.php

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

I also have this problem, per refusing sleeping pills, my doctor suggested that I try to shower to take a bath at night before I go to sleep - stop watching T.V. aprox. an hour to two hours before bed - try not to read or do anything that will stress me out before I go to sleep. Instead, do things that will calm me. Dring decaf-tea, play with my dog, take a bath. He also suggested sleeping with only one pillow, instead of two or three. Try some of these relaxing things before you go to bed. What happens is that you get your brain thinking about all these things before you go to bed and then when your ready to go to bed, it isn't. At least thats how he explained it to me... I hope this helps..

Try listening to some music, it works for me. Or putting the TV on....You just do something that takes so much energy that by the time you need to go to bed, you'll be ready to pass out.
