I was at BT at Ft. Jackson in March 1991. BT is not easy. At least it wasn't when I was there. The DS's play mind games and will drag you up a hill if they have to on a 2 mile run. They will yell at you, and make you feel 2 inches tall, but when it is all said and done on Graduation day, you will have the utmost respect for them and they will have that same respect for you for making it through the worst 8 weeks of your life.
Good Luck

I went to Ft. Jackson SC in 1973 for Basic before moving on to Infantry training and it was a mixture of new and old barracks.
It should be fairly modern by now because the old barracks where being torn down and replaced with new.
Trainees (basic training) were allowed the newer barracks for two months until they moved on to their MOS advanced training fort.
I started at the end of summer when it was really humid (I'm from So. California) I've never experienced leaving a wet towel hanging in the morning after taking a shower and coming back to the same wet towel at 9:00 P.M.
Training equipment was in good shape.
I liked it because the mess hall was like a giant cafeteria that had good food and drinks. You we're only allowed to go their with the platoon at breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner. For your off time they have some PX's that sell good stuff at discount also military beer (low alchohol content ) with a drinking area set up, which alot of the guys would hang out and drink. Running Chef Restaurant a version of Burger King used to be open late. There is also a bowling alley that was off limits to new recruits.
They might let you go into town after about 6 weeks and it's a small town but nice to get off base. Watch out, it being close to a military base hustlers will try to con you out of your money.
But hey if you're going into the military that's only a starting point and moving around from base to base leaves you taking the good with the bad. (unless it's for National Guard training and then you'll finish off at your home duty station)
Afterwards they transferred me un-announced to Ft. Polk Louisiana which was the arm pit of the Army at that time. I made an adventure out of it and survived.
You can make the best of it or the worst of it, You're choice.

My husband is there right now. Well he'll be home fro xmas today, but h's still in basic. He seems to like it ok. it's hard, and his company is full of the mess ups and rejects...which makes it hard on them...and they have a really bitchy female drill sgt. But aside form that he said all the courses they run andshooting and pugil fights are fun. you get to compete against other companies. it's what you make of it..if you let it get to you no place will be good, but if you don't let it bother you..you'll like it. I was told by another guy that it's for pussy's becasue that's where they send the females...but there's really no telling until you get there! :) good luck

Oh, relaxin Jackson! You will be served cocktails poolside.
In the evening, the maid will pull back your sheets and place a Godiva chocolate there.
You will always have your favorite magazine subscriptions delivered.
Sometimes you will get breakfast in bed.
Enjoy!

I did, and my old 1SG still scares the hell out of me, and he's retired. I read in the Stars and Stripes that they say "please" there now.
